Where the tropical ocean meets the sea, a peculiar kind of plant thrives in shallow, salty water. These mangrove plants are incredibly important for shoreline protection and baby fish habitats. In this video, Jonathan investigates life in mangroves by visiting both Caribbean and Pacific mangroves. Please see the accompanying study guide for educational objectives and discussion points.

In this video, Jonathan travels to the Micronesian island of Yap in the middle of the Pacific to investigate large gatherings of the world's largest ray‰ŰÓthe manta. A research program there is tracking dozens of these animals and Jonathan learns what they're doing hanging around certain coral heads every morning. The Mangrove Mapping Curricula strives to provide opportunities for students to learn about and explore mangroves and their ecosystems. Through this process it is hoped that students develop and understanding and appreciation for mangroves and the role they play in a healthy environment. Mangroves are group of tropical/subtropical trees that live in salt or sweet (salt/fresh water combination) water coastal environments. They are considered a cornerstone species and play important roles in habitat formation and stabilization of coastal environments.

What is the Marrakesh Treaty? The Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled, was adopted on June 27, 2013 by the member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).  Prompting its adoption was the widespread recognition of the problem known as a “book famine,” the situation where very few books are published in formats that are accessible to those who are blind and visually impaired.  The goal of this treaty is increase access to printed materials for these persons around the world.     The Marrakesh Treaty requires its contracting member nations to create limitations and exceptions to copyright law that will make it easier for those with these kinds of print disabilities to access printed works in accessible formats such as Braille and digital audio files.  It also establishes rules for the exchange of such accessible format copies across borders.   On September 30, 2016, the Marrakesh Treaty entered into force with 20 member states.    On February 8, 2019, the United States became the 50th member to deposit its instrument of ratification of this treaty with WIPO, and the treaty came into force in the United States on May 8, 2019.   To see how many other countries are covered by this treaty, see the Copyright Office’s circular at https://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ38a.pdf.

 This Remote Learning Plan was created by Brandee Drahota in collaboration with Rick Meyer as part of the 2020 ESU-NDE Remote Learning Plan Project. Educators worked with coaches to create Remote Learning Plans as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.The attached Remote Learning Plan is designed for preschool students. This counting lesson uses the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, as an introduction to practice counting skills and one to one correspondence. The expected lesson length is 30 minutes and includes online and offline options.
