This book is intended to serve as a resource for novice teachers as they master the art of effective classroom management, assessment, and lesson planning. At the undergraduate level, this book is designed to accompany the instruction in the EDUC 4353: Secondary Teaching Methods & Practices course before the full-internship experience. This book is intended to serve as a resource for novice teachers as they master the art of effective classroom management, assessment, and lesson planning. At the undergraduate level, this book is designed to accompany the instruction in the EDUC 4353: Secondary Teaching Methods & Practices course before the full-internship experience. At the graduate level, this book is designed to support the instruction in the EDUC 5283: Teaching Methods course with a special focus on supporting Alternatively Certified Educators. Each chapter presents a component of the teaching and learning process critical for teacher development and describes how that component is relevant to the classroom.

This book is being written, edited, and modified by Dr. Jason Proctor, Assistant Professor at Northeastern State University. This book is an open educational resource meant to be retained, reused, revised, remixed, and redistributed as needed by others who are interested in the art of teaching. Portions of the text within this book are adapted from open resources marked with Creative Commons licenses, and the adapted portions retain their original license restrictions. Such sections will be noted with an attribution statement at the end of each chapter. Some of the resources within this book are accessible free of charge online for your use, but they are not openly licensed. This course uses Lean Launchpad for creating entrepreneurial ventures that start small but can be scaled up fairly quickly. You should you take this class only IF you are interested in creating such ventures. This course provides real world, hands-on learning on what it's like to actually start a high-tech company. This class is not about how to write a business plan. It's not an exercise on how smart you arein a classroom, or how well you use the research library to size markets. This is a practical class essentially a lab, not a theory or "book" class. Our goal, within the constraints of a classroom and a limited amount of time, is to create an entrepreneurial experience for you with all of the pressures and demands of the real world in an early stage start up.

The class collects waste for a week and then student groups spend a day sorting and analyzing the garbage with respect to recyclable and non-recyclable items. Tree Steward Manual is designed for Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners who are training to be certified advanced Master Gardener tree stewards. Written by a dedicated team of volunteers who themselves completed advanced Master Gardener tree steward training, the manual covers a wide range of topics, specific to each region of Virginia, including identifying trees, selecting and planting appropriate trees for local landscapes, caring for trees, and troubleshooting tree problems.

In Virginia, advanced Master Gardener tree steward training is offered by the local Extension Master Gardener (EMG) program. Once the training is completed, volunteers become certified advanced EMG tree stewards and commit to a specific number of volunteer hours working on local tree steward projects. EMG tree stewards work on projects based on the needs of their local community as determined mutually between the local agent/coordinator and active tree stewards.

While Tree Steward Manual was developed with EMG training in mind, it is also appropriate for general readers who want to deepen their knowledge of trees and tree care. ​​

In this book, we offer an introduction to OER publishing, examples of Open Pedagogy, OER-Enabled Pedagogy, and working with learners; and guidelines, best practices, and suggestions for how to plan, create, publish, and distribute your OER textbook and materials.

This book is divided into four chapters:
Teaching with OER, Open Pedagogy, and Working with Learners offers information about teaching with Open Educational Resources (OER), the ideas, practices, and principles behind Open Pedagogy, and working with students using OER and Open Pedagogy. We also provide resources to help orient students to OER, Open Pedagogy, and best practices for digital and online learning.

Planning an OER Project provides guidelines on planning, workflow, and development of Open Educational Resource (OER) Textbooks; guidelines and suggestions on outlining, compiling, and writing your OER textbook and materials; a chapter prototype, and a quick guide to Pressbooks.

Pre-Publication takes you through the steps necessary before you publish your OER textbook or materials. Sections include editing and formatting; assessment, evaluation, and rubrics; accessibility and usability, including localization, culturally appropriate materials, and student-centered pedagogy; and platform decisions.

Post-Publication gives an overview of steps to take after you publish your OER textbook or materials. Topics include formatting output files, post-release considerations, user evaluation, including instructor and student evaluation, as well as peer-review; and updates, sustaining your OER textbook or materials, and considerations around new versions and new editions.

This learning activity is designed to be used in a large introductory chemistry course, as part of a larger module of learning activities that includes prior viewing of an interactive instructional video. Instructional videos are to be viewed before class meetings. During class time, students work in small groups and discuss the presented information and question prompts, and will build upon the concepts discussed in that video in order to develop a new, extended concept.Students should be tasked with working together to complete the prompts in each section of the activity by a set time limit. After each section is completed, the entire class can share their answers via a personal response system, and the instructor can review and explain the correct responses, using the accompanying slide deck, which translates the problems into multiple-choice prompts.Instructional resources include 1) interactive instructional videos (these can be embedded directly into the learning management system) 2) the learning activity (.docx and .pdf) 3) the learning objectives (.docx and .pdf) and 4) the slide deck (.pptx). - Chemical Bonding- Resonance - Intermolecular Forces- Collision Theory- Equilibrium- Nucleophiles and Electrophiles

Using Dynamic Digital Maps to Teach Petrology

In this session we will examine how to utilize Dynamic Digital Maps (DDMs) in undergraduate petrology courses to bring inaccessible and exciting volcanic field areas to the students in the classroom and to engage the students in authentic research experiences. A DDM is a stand-alone "presentation manager" computer program that contains interactive maps, analytical data, digital images and movies. They are essentially complete geologic maps in digital format, available on CD-ROM and on line. We have developed two different kinds of exercises that use DDMs to provide field-based context for undergraduate research projects in petrology. In one, the students use the DDM of the Tatara-San Pedro volcanic complex of the Andes Mountains of central Chile to develop a group research poster on part of the volcano's evolution, to present to the class, modeled after what would be presented at a national meeting. The second exercise focuses on the Springville Volcanic field, where the students try to understand the magma evolution using both field relations and quantitative modeling skills.
