Long Description:
The curriculum shared here utilizes Terra Nostra, a multimedia symphony about climate change. Variations of the curriculum were developed by Kim Davenport for use in several 100-, 200- and 300-level non-major music courses at the University of Washington, Tacoma. More than 50% of UWT undergraduate students are the first in their family to attend college, and nearly 60% are students of color.

Depending on the exact level and subject-matter of each course, Terra Nostra was utilized in support of a variety of learning objectives: Building students’ listening skills, through the combination of music and video, and through the analysis of music without words Drawing interdisciplinary connections between music and other disciplines Providing an example of music created to raise awareness about a timely social issue

Although the assignments shared here were designed for music courses, they could easily be adapted for inclusion in courses in other disciplines, and this is indeed one of the motivations for sharing this curriculum through a Creative Commons license.

Threshold Concepts in Biochemistry
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

Rating
0.0 stars

Short Description:
This book is designed as a succinct and focused resource, specifically aimed to help students grasp key threshold concepts in Biochemistry. Due to their troublesome nature, understanding threshold concepts is a cognitively demanding task. By using a series of thematically linked case studies that accompany theory, the cognitive load will be reduced. This will free up students to focus on learning concepts rather than distracting them with unnecessary specifics. Please note this book is being published iteratively and the final four chapters will be available in the first half of 2024.

Long Description:
Biochemistry (and Molecular Biology) represent one of the fastest-growing fields of scientific research and technical innovation and the resulting biotechnology is increasingly applied to other fields of study. So, an understanding of Biochemistry is increasingly important for students in all biological disciplines. However, at the same time, the content is inherently complex, highly abstract, and often deeply rooted in the pure sciences – mathematics, chemistry, and physics. This makes it difficult to both learn and to teach.

A Case Study for British Columbia

Short Description:
This case study explores the ways in which wildfire events impact individual health and livelihood from a micro, meso, and macro level. The case study walks the learner through an introduction to how climate change further exacerbates wildfire occurrence, alongside the myriad health impacts that stem from wildfire smoke exposure.

Long Description:
This case study explores the ways in which wildfire events impact individual health and livelihood from a micro, meso, and macro level. The case study walks the learner through an introduction to how climate change further exacerbates wildfire occurrence, alongside the myriad health impacts that stem from wildfire smoke exposure. Notable importance is given to the need to advocate for Indigenous Sovereignty and traditional ways of knowing around wildfire management. Lastly, through the sharing of a case example from the lived experiences of individuals who fled the 2021 Lytton, British Columbia wildfire, the learner is challenged to consider upstream approaches to emergency preparedness in the face of foreseeable future calamities.

Unified Approach to Electricity and Magnetism

Calculus-Based Physics II: Unified Approach

Long Description:
I’ve taught PHY2049 at UNF since 2014 (on 12 different semesters). I moved from using an expensive textbook to an OER textbook (OpenStax) around 2016-2017. The main focus of this class is on concepts related to electricity and magnetism, which by the end of the 19th century was unified as two aspects of the same phenomenon. All available textbooks for this class (there’s many out there) including the available open source texts, treat these concepts as a set of independent topics – giving very little (if any) insight to the now well-understood unified theory of electromagnetism. During the Pandemic I began to reformulate this class with an emphasis on the unified nature of electromagnetism with the intention to provide the students a strong intuitive grasp of the subject. Without any available textbooks at the appropriate level that supports this “Unified Approach” to electricity and magnetism, I severed ties with all textbooks and started to build a content library of video lectures. These video lectures served as a “video textbook” and I started implementing this in Summer of 2020. These content videos provided the backbone for this “Unified Approach to PHY2049” that was offered in the Spring 2021 and Summer 2021 semesters as well as the current Fall 2021 semester. These offerings have been completely free to the students (without any textbook and other costs). Moreover, the data gathered from the Spring 2021 and Summer 2021 offerings of this “Unified Approach” to PHY2049 (based on a nationally implemented testing tool) shows a distinct normalized gain in the learning outcomes compared to that of the traditional approach commonly used for this course (and followed by all available textbooks).

University Physics I: Classical Mechanics

This is a “minimalist” textbook for a first semester of university, calculus-based physics, covering classical mechanics (including one chapter on mechanical waves, but excluding fluids), plus a brief introduction to thermodynamics. The presentation owes much to Mazur’s The Principles and Practice of Physics: conservation laws, momentum and energy, are introduced before forces, and one-dimensional setups are thoroughly explored before two-dimensional systems are considered. It contains both problems and worked-out examples.

University Physics is a three-volume collection that meets the scope and sequence requirements for two- and three-semester calculus-based physics courses. Volume 1 covers mechanics, sound, oscillations, and waves. Volume 2 covers thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, and Volume 3 covers optics and modern physics. This textbook emphasizes connections between between theory and application, making physics concepts interesting and accessible to students while maintaining the mathematical rigor inherent in the subject. Frequent, strong examples focus on how to approach a problem, how to work with the equations, and how to check and generalize the result.

University Physics Volume 2 is the second of a three book series that (together) covers a two- or three-semester calculus-based physics course. This text has been developed to meet the scope and sequence of most university physics courses (in terms of what Volume 2 is designed to deliver) and provides a foundation for a career in mathematics, science, or engineering. The book provides an important opportunity for students to learn the core concepts of physics and understand how those concepts apply to their lives and to the world around them.
