Dynamics of the Atmosphere
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

This course begins with a study of the role of dynamics in the general physics of the atmosphere, the consideration of the differences between modeling and approximation, and the observed large-scale phenomenology of the atmosphere. Only then are the basic equations derived in rigorous manner. The equations are then applied to important problems and methodologies in meteorology and climate, with discussions of the history of the topics where appropriate. Problems include the Hadley circulation and its role in the general circulation, atmospheric waves including gravity and Rossby waves and their interaction with the mean flow, with specific applications to the stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation, tides, the super-rotation of Venus’ atmosphere, the generation of atmospheric turbulence, and stationary waves among other problems. The quasi-geostrophic approximation is derived, and the resulting equations are used to examine the hydrodynamic stability of the circulation with applications ranging from convective adjustment to climate.

The DMT Clearinghouse is a registry for online learning resources about research data management. Initial seed funding was provided by the U.S. Geological Survey's Community for Data Integration. Subsequent funding has been granted by an Institute of Museum and Library Services National Leadership Grant (LG-70-18-0092-18). Developed in collaboration with the Earth Sciences Information Partnership (ESIP) Federation, and DataONE, with subsequent support from the University of New Mexico Libraries Research Data Services, the DMT Clearinghouse is available for searching, browsing, and submitting information about learning resources on data management topics. DMT Clearinghouse FeaturesThe Search Interface allows users to find learning resources by entering terms, names of people and organizations, dates, and keywords. The Browse Interface allows users to view the entire list of learning resources, and to filter by educational framework. An educational framework is a plan or set of steps that defines or collects the content using clear, definable standards about what the student should know and understand. For purposes of the DMT Clearinghouse, a given learning resource may be associated with a community-defined standard for data management, for example:USGS Science Support FrameworkDataONE Data Life CycleESIP Data Management Short Course for Scientists The Digital Preservation NetworkInternational Council for Science (ICSU) World Data System (WDS) Training Resource GuideFAIR Data Principles The Submission Form allows users to enter information about learning resources that they would like to see included in the DMT Clearinghouse. A user log in is not required to submit a resource with key, required information. To add more information about a learning resource than just that required, please log in or create an account (click "Log In at the upper right side of the screen.) NOTE: Submissions will be published to the DMT Clearinghouse following an editorial review to ensure the resource meets quality and selection criteria for inclusion.. You may be contacted for more information about your submission, if needed. Your contact information will not be made available publicly without your permission. The Climate 101 presentation was developed by Brandon Leshchinskiy in collaboration with Professor Dava Newman, MIT Portugal, and EarthDNA in an effort to mobilize young people as educators on the issue of climate change. The presentation addresses not only the science but also the economics and civics of climate change, incorporating a negotiation activity that brings key concepts to life.
This resource includes the slides and instructions for the presentation, along with an introductory video from Prof. Newman, a video of Leshchinskiy actually delivering the presentation to a classroom full of students, and extensive supporting materials that will help users to become climate ambassadors and deliver the Climate 101 presentation themselves.

Rating
0.0 stars

Rapid changes at Earth's surface, largely in response to human activity, have led to the realization that fundamental questions remain to be answered regarding the natural functioning of the Critical Zone, the thin veneer at Earth's surface where the atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere interact. EARTH 530 will introduce you to the basics necessary for understanding Earth surface processes in the Critical Zone through an integration of various scientific disciplines. Those who successfully complete EARTH 530 will be able to apply their knowledge of fundamental concepts of Earth surface processes to understanding outstanding fundamental questions in Critical Zone science and how their lives are intimately linked to Critical Zone health.
