This resource allow teachers and parents to plan for and use Philosophical Inquiry in the classroom or in a small group setting. When we encourage students to think deeply and to express their thinking we see that it helps them to interact better as learning in general classroom discussions.

This resource provides general rules of conversation, as well as several polite phrases for students to use when introducing new ideas or challenging existing ones. It also provides examples of inappropriate discussion etiquette and discusses when and how to leave a discussion that has become unproductive.

OVERVIEW
Students need to practice all types of writing, and oftentimes argumentative writing is ignored in favor of persuasive writing. In fact, students may not even understand there is a difference between these two types of writing. In this lesson, students examine the differences between argumentative writing and persuasive writing. After choosing topics that interest them, students conduct research which becomes the foundation for their argumentative essays.

In this lesson students will practice visualizing and understanding that visualization is an important comprehension strategy. Students will share their visualization of the story through original artwork.

Playground Physics is an iPad and Progressive Web application (app) developed by the New York Hall of Science. The app is accompanied by a supplemental Teacher Guide for middle school teachers. The Playground Physics curriculum is a six-week supplemental physics curriculum, designed to be used alongside any existing science curricula in the middle grades. It includes a teacher guide and student work, and maps to the NGSS and NYSSLS. The curriculum is focused around three different units which each explore a major concept in physics (motion, force and energy) through a specific type of physical play (catching a ball, jumping, swinging).

Playground Physics is particularly well suited to supporting diverse learners because it leverages students’ abilities to playfully ask and answer their own questions to connect academic content to what they notice, describe and analyze about their own individual actions. Additionally, the multimodal nature of the program, which uses videos and images as well as kinesthetic exploration to build understanding, is less text-dependent than more traditional physics instructional materials.

After reading Playing for Change, students will have the opportunity to break into groups and do research about various subgroups and topics provided in the text. The intention is for this to be a jigsaw activity where groups can organize their information with the interactive notebook sheets provided, and then present or share with the class what they have learned. Teachers can use this for language arts or social studies assessments, if needed.

This resource details plot for students in 6th grade. It uses the plot diagram, but focuses on making the students see it as a roller coaster instead of a moutain.

The Plot Diagram is an organizational tool focusing on a pyramid or triangular shape, which is used to map the events in a story. This mapping of plot structure allows readers and writers to visualize the key features of stories.

In this lesson, students will be introduced to Edgar Allan Poe's theory on the “single effect” of the short story. They will read a passage from Poe as well as his short story “The Tell-Tale Heart.”Students will annotate the text to look for how the author uses Gothic elements to set a mood in the environment (the "single effect") and the changes or effects it has on the main character (the focus on the individual Poe is known for).

Robert Frost said, "A poem begins in delight and ends in wisdom." We might say the delight comes from the ways that poets play with words and use language to create word pictures that speak to the heart. Then, it is that message to the heart that brings the wisdom. This course will begin with a study of the language of poetry, then move on to looking at how poets use the tools of poetry to create their works, and end with using that language and those tools to study some of the world's great poems. Let's begin that journey!

Keri McAllister uses technology, workstations, and a lot of choice to turn her students loose on a unit on poetry. In workstations students watch "poetry in motion" videos, create a podcast about their chosen poet, and post reflections on a chosen poem on their class blog.

This collection uses primary sources to explore the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Digital Public Library of America Primary Source Sets are designed to help students develop their critical thinking skills and draw diverse material from libraries, archives, and museums across the United States. Each set includes an overview, ten to fifteen primary sources, links to related resources, and a teaching guide. These sets were created and reviewed by the teachers on the DPLA's Education Advisory Committee.

In the first bend of this unit, students will closely read multiple perspectives on the “American Dream” in
order to collect information to use and integrate that information into an evidence-based perspective.
Students will examine primary and secondary source documents to make informed decisions about
what information to collect that may inspire their writing about “The American Dream.”

In the second bend of this unit, students will engage in a short-research process to create a draft of
argumentative speech on the “American Dream” with a specific purpose, audience, and tone in mind.
They will use their inquiry research questions from bend one to begin analyzing search results and citing
and gathering relevant, accurate, and credible information.
