Students will analyze shapes and patterns in a photograph, hear stories about people who were forced to move to internment camps because of their ethnicity, and create drawings that tell a story about a young girl's life in an internment camp.

During this learning experience students will analyze and discuss a variety of sources related to Juneteenth and Independence Day. They will compare and contrast the two holidays and grapple with the question, “How do different people and groups celebrate freedom and independence in the United States?”

During World War II, thousands of Black Americans joined the Navy, ready to serve their country. But deep-seated prejudice prevented Black sailors from rising in the ranks, and never in its history had the Navy commissioned Black officers. This is the story of the men who broke that barrier and became the first class of African American officers in the United States Navy, overcoming skepticism and hostility at every turn. Their skill, resilience, and character propelled them to great success in postwar life, and paved the way for today’s diverse armed forces.

What did people do to occupy themselves before there were computers, phones, or even electricity? Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum's Director of Education Deb Rantanen teaches how to play one of the most popular board games from ancient times up to the United States' Colonial Era: Nine Men's Morris. Along the way she'll also share some of the history of where the gameboard has been found. Use to support Maryland Social Studies Frameworks for grades 2 or 7. For Grade 2, Content Topic "Geography," have students note, with a map, where they live then the continents where the game has been found. Finally have them write the total of times the game has been found on each continent and express where they believe the game was invented. History and science come to life in a dialogue with Franklin the inventor, developed through lesson activities that incorporate research, imagination, writing, visual arts, and drama.

In 2023, Washington State passed legislation designating January as Americans of Chinese Descent History Month, the first-ever in the U.S. Public schools are encouraged to designate time in January for appropriate activities in commemoration of the lives, history, achievements, and contributions of Americans of Chinese descent. Students have created posters specifically intended for use in schools and classrooms. These posters serve the purpose of acknowledging and illustrating the historical timeline of Americans of Chinese descent in the United States, including highlighting significant events in that history.The posters are available in 11"x17" or in 24"x36". Districts can upload their own logo in the corners. 

This activity was produced in conjunction with The Library of Congress and the TPS at Metropolitan State University of Denver. This activity allows learners to examine and look at migrant workers who first came to California during the Bracero Program using primary resources to develop an understanding of why and how they came to California to work. Students will also study the timeline from the Bracero Program's beginning to its end and the appearance of the United Farm Workers Union. This study will lead students to a realization of why the UFW was necessary and what Cesar Chavez's impact was.This activity will allow learners to analyze and understand:* The hopes and dreams of those migrant workers from Mexico who came and continue coming to California to work.* The opposite of hope is fear – and how fear can destroy hope.* The ways that hope can overcome fear.
