Inspired by the guidelines of the Universal Design for Learning (CAST, 2018), "Universal Latin Fables" wants to give the opportunity to discover Phaedrus' fables to as many students as possible. The web-site uses storytelling process based entirely on the Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Not only does it make the reading process easier, but it also allows autism spectrum students to understand the fable on several levels.

To whom it turns?

AUTISM SPECTRUM
All the fables can be read using Alternative and Augmentative Communication and PECS symbols offered by SymWriter, specific for autistic people but usable by everyone.

VISUAL IMPAIRMENT
The "Listen" step can be useful to blind students. Furthermore, the website is responsive and the text is scalable.

HEARING IMPAIRMENT
The "Watch" and the "Read" step can be useful to deaf students.

The website is designed to be used by adults and teenagers or by children helped by a parent or a supporting teacher.

Literacy – Ethics and The Collection of Personal Data
Unrestricted Use

There are two basic thoughts with this lesson that are combined into one concept. First, what is the meaning of ethics and second, what personal data is being collected about us on the internet and why? Once those two thoughts are discussed and understood, the question being studied is, what ethical standards should be in place when collecting personal data about a person? The lesson begins with the meaning of ethics and some ethical scenarios. Then, looking into questions about what type of data that is collected about people on social media and gaming sites. A think-pair-share activity answering the questions, “What is a digital footprint?”, “What information about us is being gathered and stored when we play games and/or get on social media sites?” After students share as a class, a short video can be shown that explains ways our personal information is being gathered and used digitally. The students then have short paragraphs that they answer questions about and summarize what they read. The summaries are shared as in a group or with the class with some discussion. In conclusion, the decision of what ethical standards should be in place when others are collecting, storing and sharing about us. There is a closing reflection and Word Art activity at the end of the lesson.

Little Kenny at the Farm is about a little boy, Kenny, who gets into trouble a lot. His class went on a visit to a farm. Upon reaching the farm they were given one specific instruction “Do not ride the donkeys!’. Little Kenny got bored during the middle of the tour of the farm and went exploring on his own. He found the donkeys and decided that they look harmless enough and decided to take a ride. He learned a valuable lesson from the ride.

This book is also available for download (PDF) from the catalogue of the Jamaica Library Service at https://catalogue.jls.gov.jm/ .
