This unit is written for high school French 3 and 4, and it focuses on interpreting historical events while building up background knowledge. It creates an overall awareness about the French-speaking world rather than memorizing grammar structures and rules often emphasized in language learning. Our curriculum is designed to give the teachers leniency to expand and use history, art, culture, and cross-disciplinary topics. Students in French 3 and 4 can explore various themes independently – under the overarching themes of contemporary and standardized French language teaching. As students move from levels 1 and 2 to 3 and 4, the task difficulty increases as students go through stages of second language acquisition. Precisely, in levels 1 and 2, our curriculum, although thematic, focuses more on vocabulary, which is often contextualized. Hence, in French 3 and 4, the tasks become more cognitively demanding. The context becomes less evident as we go from conversational scenes to interpreting facts, giving opinions, and expressing thoughts in speaking and writing.

This course addresses the place of contemporary queer identities in French discourse and discusses the new generation of queer authors and their principal concerns. The course offers an analysis of the keen interest shown by France and the French in North American cultures since the 18th century. Not only did France contribute to the construction of both Canadian and American nations, but it has also constantly delineated its identity by way of praising or criticizing North American cultures. Using materials drawn from literature, comics, TV shows, and series as well as political debates, the course will historically trace this ambivalent relation exploring various themes such as liberalism, entertainment and the media, trade and cultural goods, transatlantic intellectual encounters, and translation.
The course is taught entirely in French.
About the instructor: Bruno Perreau is the Cynthia L. Reed Associate Professor of French Studies at MIT. He is also an Affiliate Faculty at the Center for European Studies, Harvard. Perreau recently published The Politics of Adoption: Gender and the Making of French Citizenship (MIT Press, 2014), Queer Theory: The French Response (Stanford University Press, 2016), Les Défis de la République (ed. with Joan W. This ebook was originally written for students of French who enrolled in a semester (twelve weeks) of Intermediate French within the College of Arts, Society and Education at James Cook University. It has since been adapted and updated to provide a resource for all French learners who wish to expand their knowledge of Global French, improve their Pacific Literacy, or visit the Francophone Islands of the Pacific region.

Paris Through the Pages is the culminating project for an advanced level undergraduate French course that explores the images of Paris in literary works from the 17th to 20th centuries. As an open source book, it is intended to be re-used, revised, and repurposed by undergraduate students and academics in French studies. The students who participated in this project spent a semester reading works by French authors from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, integrating them within their historical and cultural contexts. Given that the majority of the semester was spent introducing students to these authors and works, the students could only spend the final few weeks refining their research on a particular author and creating a chapter in groups that represented the literary images of Paris from a particular era. Although the students wrote and revised several versions of their individual articles, they have established a foundation of research for other classes and students to explore, expand, and revise themselves. The hope is to create a book that other French classes—at Muhlenberg and elsewhere—can build from and expand the thematic approach and literary perspectives.
