This Protein Purification video lesson is intended to give students some insight into the process and tools that scientists and engineers use to explore proteins. It is designed to extend the knowledge of students who are already somewhat sophisticated and who have a good understanding of basic biology. The question that motivates this lesson is, ''what makes two cell types different?'' and this question is posed in several ways. Such scientific reasoning raises the experimental question: how could you study just a subset of specialized proteins that distinguish one cell type from another? Two techniques useful in this regard are considered in the lesson.

Many people are fascinated with ancient Egypt. The amazing, unique culture influenced many other civilizations and cultures. If you study the history of math, you will see how this influence included mathematics. Ancient Egypt also lasted an incredibly long time – over 3000 years. According to Egyptologist Bob Brier, “No civilization lasted so long, contributed so much, or repeatedly amazed as did ancient Egypt.”
In this Open Educational Resource activity, students will have the opportunity to learn about ancient Egyptian numerals and basic arithmetic. For motivation, the setting is a scribal school with each student using a clipboard, paper, and fine point black marker to simulate a board, papyrus, and brush with ink. The activity can also be completed on its own without the scribal school setting.

A 66 year old married, Caucasian male with a history of HIV/AIDS presents to the emergency department with a chief complaint of back pain for the past 3 weeks and hemoptysis for the past few days. The pain is sharp, in the left side of his lower back, and does not radiate or cause weakness or numbness. The pain is exacerbated with movement and minimally relieved with pain medication. The patient denies fevers, night sweats, and weight loss. His HIV is managed with Atripla. His HIV RNA levels are undetectable. His family history is significant for his mother having pancreatic cancer, his father having prostate cancer, and his brother acquiring tuberculosis at the age of 14. The patient is a retired maintenance man and lives at home. He has a 15 pack year smoking history. He denies alcohol and intravenous drug use. The physical exam is significant for tachycardia and tenderness over the left rib cage and flank. A straight leg test is positive at 30 degrees, reproducing the patient's flank pain.

The patient is a young adult male who presented at the outside hospital with much more fatigue than usual for the last couple of months since early last fall. His symptoms dramatically worsened a couple of weeks prior to presentation, consisting of early satiety, pressure and left back pain. He had lost about 10 pounds over 1.5 weeks, but the rest of his review of system was unremarkable. He was transferred here given his leukocytosis of 50 x 109/L and a bone marrow biopsy showing marked myeloid hyperplasia consistent with Myeloproliferative Neoplasm (MPN), best classified as BCR-ABL negative Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia (CMML) per outside report.
