This textbook examines U.S. History from before European Contact through Reconstruction, while focusing on the people and their history. Prior to its publication, History in the Making underwent a rigorous double blind peer review, a process that involved over thirty scholars who reviewed the materially carefully, objectively, and candidly in order to ensure not only its scholarly integrity but also its high standard of quality. This book provides a strong emphasis on critical thinking about US History by providing several key features in each chapter. Learning Objectives at the beginning of each chapter help students to understand what they will learn in each chapter. Before You Move On sections at the end of each main section are designed to encourage students to reflect on important concepts and test their knowledge as they read. In addition, each chapter includes Critical Thinking Exercises that ask the student to deeply explore chapter content, Key Terms, and a Chronology of events.

She emphasizes the individuality of homelessness, the fact that they not only lack possessions but have no place to keep them."The First" (also titled "Eviction") is a short poem by Lucille Clifton that provides the opportunity to compare and contrast the approach to the same issue through another genre.In "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls the parents choose to live as homeless students.  Students will compare and contrast the Walls' view of homelessness with Quindlen's and Clifton's.Final Assessment: How do Anna Quindlen and Lucille Clifton use language to convince the reader that their arguments have value? This lesson is packed with information on causative verbs. Let, make, have and get are the most common causative verbs. In addition to this, students will practice forming and using causative verbs (verb + object + bare infinitive), (e.g. My brother let me drive his car). They will also be introduced to allow, permit and enable followed by the infinitives.  By the end of this lesson, students will be able to make logical sentences using causative verbs. This lesson is full of several activities that are entertaining and informative for beginner students. It includes lots of visuals and pictures so students have a better understanding of how subject pronouns are used to describe people or things. It also includes several matching, reading, speaking, and picture description activities. Finally, it contains gap-fill exercises so that students can practice using subject pronouns in sentences. Though it appears that it is longer, this lesson is not overly dense. Students learn the patterns in the hundred board by assembling puzzles. Teachers are able to assess student use of patterns in rows and columns by observing the student at work. This task is easily differentiated to accommodate the varied levels in a first grade class by changing the number of pieces and the shape of the pieces. Puzzle bags should be sequentially lettered so that students progress through harder versions of the task. Finally, students are asked to create their own puzzles for classmates to solve.
