Musical Overtones is a four-week unit that connects music and history. Students research musical styles as it relates to the other arts and science. Students select a musician and analyze his or her work and its impact on history. A discussion of this impact is presented in an open forum during instructional time.

This lesson is part of a sequential unit. Students study works of art that depict two people who care for each other and study how the artists use line, color, shape, and space to convey the sense of a caring relationship. Students then use these principles to create their own drawings of two caring people

Students will analyze the sculpture "Head with Horns" by Paul Gauguin through objective and subjective writing activities and class discussion. They will then consider the meaning of this sculpture and examine the differences between objective and subjective analysis.

Students look at works of art that convey the idea of working together and think about how artists use space -- foreground, middle ground, and background -- to communicate this concept. In groups they use their knowledge of space to create a three-dimensional tableau that communicates the concept of working together

Objectives:
1. To Learn about the importance of hands

2. To identify the many uses of hands

3. To create art using hands (and other body parts) as both a vehicle and an inspiration

4. To incorporate the elements of color, pattern, line, symmetry and negative positive space into the creation of art

Audiences:
This lesson is appropriate for all ages and audiences but is ideal for elementary-aged children.

Students will discuss what is communicated in an ancient statuette by analyzing the size and poses of two figures. They will learn that stories were passed through oral tradition in ancient times. They will create sculptures of themselves, a companion, and a favorite musical instrument using spheres and cylinders, and then recite a story inspired by their sculptures.
