For advanced undergraduate students: Observe resonance in a collection of driven, damped harmonic oscillators. Vary the driving frequency and amplitude, the damping constant, and the mass and spring constant of each resonator. Notice the long-lived transients when damping is small, and observe the phase change for resonators above and below resonance.

Using Theatre to Reimagine Graduate Supervision

Short Description:
Rock the Boat is an open-access multimedia resource designed to provoke dialogue about graduate supervision relationships within universities, and their impact on student and faculty wellbeing. Drawing upon the tradition of Research-based Theatre, Rock the Boat draws attention to graduate supervision as a vital form of pedagogy, and as rife with challenges — especially relating to equity, inclusion and diversity.

Long Description:
Drawing upon the tradition of Research-based Theatre, Rock the Boat draws attention to graduate supervision as a vital form of pedagogy, and as rife with challenges — especially relating to equity, inclusion and diversity. By supporting structured and safe dialogue about some of these challenges on campus, we hope to support students, faculty and staff in developing healthy, respectful supervisory relationships, thereby enhancing the wellbeing of all.

The resource comprises four filmed scenes, each seven to 10 minutes long: Zoom Fatigue, Contentious Authorship, No Other Choice and Disclosures. Each scene dramatizes a relationship between one or more graduate students and their supervisors and provokes dialogue around specific challenges that can occur. These include supervisory communication, authorship of scientific papers, competition between students, gender and racial discrimination, balancing personal and professional priorities, mental health and privacy.

The scenes can be used in any facilitated group context. You may, for example, wish to use them for graduate student orientation, during equity, diversity and inclusion workshops, for supervisory training sessions, or during faculty or departmental retreats. The scenes are professionally acted and filmed, and this guide will help you design and facilitate a group session that generates useful dialogue, whatever your specific goals.

Rocky-to-Sandy Beach: A Weathering Model
Read the Fine Print
Educational Use
Rating
0.0 stars

Given a hypothetical civil engineering scenario, student pairs are tasked to apply their knowledge of the rock cycle, rock types, rock weathering and the engineering design process to model a potential method to create a sandy beach from three rocky island shorelines. For their abrasion weathering models, they use wide-mouth lidded jars and three types of candies that serve as the testing “rocks.” They simulate both low- and high-energy weathering environments. After completing the simple weathering techniques and analyzing their observations of the results, they conclude by recommending to the island developer which rocky shoreline would be the easiest, simplest, and most cost-effective from which to create a sandy beach. A worksheet and pre/post quiz are provided.

Rube Goldberg and the Meaning of Machines

Simple and compound machines are designed to make work easier. When we encounter a machine that does not fit this understanding, the so-called machine seems absurd. In this lesson, the cartoons of Rube Goldberg are introduced and engage the students in critical thinking about the way his inventions make a simple task even harder to complete. As the final lesson in the simple machines unit, the study of Rube Goldberg machines can help students evaluate the importance and usefulness of the many machines around them.
