This 14-minute video introduces the key features and differences of the new Common Core State standards for math. It looks at the purpose of the standards for mathematical practice and how they should be integrated with content. It looks at how teaching fewer topics in each grade will change educator planning. And it discusses how the new standards can help close the achievement gap.

CODAP (Common Online Data Analysis Platform) is an easy to use data analysis environment that can be used in a wide variety of educational settings. CODAP is designed for grades 5 through 14, and aimed at teachers and curriculum developers. CODAP can be used across the curriculum to help students summarize, visualize, and interpret data, Conadvancing their skills to use data as evidence to support a claim.

This guide walks you through the part of the Common Sense website that focuses on K-12 Digital Citizenship curriculum. The lesson plans include everything educators need to begin teaching this content in their classrooms and many have accompanying high-quality videos. There are also engaging games for younger students and an interactive social media simulation for older students. Topics include: media balance & well-being, privacy & security, digital footprint & identity, relationships & comunication, cyberbullying, digital drama & hate speech, and news & media literacy.

This approach can help teachers to form positive connections with students and their families, and maintain a holistic/asset-based perspective about each student.

This activity is an instructional activity that can be used in AP Chemistry with Topic 1.1.  The activity has students arrange samples with different units in three different ways to show that they know how to perform different mole problem calculations.

What does it mean to belong to a country? Can events change what that means? This interactive compares two paintings by John Lewis Krimmel. Both show people in Philadelphia’s Centre Square celebrating the Fourth of July, but one was painted in 1812, just after the United States had declared war on Great Britain, and the other was painted in 1819, four years after the war had ended. The two look very different, reflecting changing ideas. Thorough explanation of the how and why of text-dependent questions for close, analytic reading. Includes examples.

The Common Core State Standards for reading strongly focus on students gathering evidence, knowledge, and insight from what they read. Indeed, eighty to ninety percent of the Reading Standards in each grade require text dependent analysis; accordingly, aligned curriculum materials should have a similar percentage of text dependent questions.

As the name suggests, a text dependent question specifically asks a question that can only be answered by referring explicitly back to the text being read. It does not rely on any particular background information extraneous to the text nor depend on students having other experiences or knowledge; instead it privileges the text itself and what students can extract from what is before them.

Complex sentences are an important step in enabling students to
produce more sophisticated writing. Mastering complex sentences
allows students to have greater control when communicating.
This guide is intended to provide a starting point for you to approach
the teaching of writing in your classroom. It builds on the knowledge
learnt in the other sentence guides.
