The Centrality of Style

In The Centrality of Style, editors Mike Duncan and Star Medzerian Vanguri argue that style is a central concern of composition studies even as they demonstrate that some of the most compelling work in the area has emerged from the margins of the field. Calling attention to this paradox in his foreword to the collection, Paul Butler observes, "Many of the chapters work within the liminal space in which style serves as both a centralizing and decentralizing force in rhetoric and composition. Clearly, the authors and editors have made an invaluable contribution in their collection by exposing the paradoxical nature of a canon that continues to play a vital role in our disciplinary history."

Christopher Columbus is one of the most controversial figures in history.  By some, he is viewed as a grand explorer who opened up new areas for European conquest and profit.  But by others, he is viewed as a butcher, who brought disease, and who's actions began the destruction of an entire continent's population.  This lesson will show you two different views of Columbus so that you can draw your own conclusions about whether we should celebrate Columbus or not.

This open-access textbook helps students learn to read New Testament Greek at the elementary level. It includes clear, concise explanations of grammar and syntax, helpful examples, and essential vocabulary, with no assumption of previous language study, and it does not require accents for most forms. At the end of each of its twenty chapters, students will find short Greek-language episodes from the life of a fictional early Christian family of Jewish ancestry, short readings from the Greek New Testament and Septuagint, and review/homework exercises that can help reinforce new concepts and vocabulary. This book can help students prepare to read Nijay Gupta and Jonah Sandford’s Intermediate Greek Reader: Galatians and Related Texts, also available as an open-access textbook.

Middle and High School educators across Lebanon County, Pennsylvania developed lesson plans to integrate the Pennsylvania Career Education and Work Standards with the content they teach. This work was made possible through a partnership between the South Central PA Workforce Investment Board (SCPa Works) and Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13) and was funded by a Teacher in the Workplace Grant Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. This lesson plan was developed by one of the talented educators who participated in this project during the 2019-2020 school year.

This module is intended to provide students with a starting point for the mock trial exercise. Students should be assigned reading of Harr's book "A Civil Action" as well as view the Touchstone Pictures movie by the same name. Following the reading and viewing, students should prepare an exercise that allows them to put the chronology of events together to help them better understand the sequence of activities related to the trial as well as the characters who were involved in these activities.

In this lab I simply have students dissolve halite and sylvite in water at various temperatures. I use this experiment to introduce students to the principles of equilibrium thermodynamics, as well as basic lab skills, data analysis, and lab report writing. Students use basic laboratory skills to conduct their experiments then analyze their data using a spreadsheet program such as Excel. They then write up their results and discussion in a formal lab report.

Soil and Water Conservation: An Annotated Bibliography highlights freely-available online resources covering various aspects of soil and water conservation, and is designed to be a resource for conservation students and practitioners. The thirteen chapters in the annotated bibliography are grouped into four sections, including History and Fundamentals, Conservation Practices, Conservation Implementation, and Careers. Types of cited resources include extension bulletins, USDA NRCS conservation practice standards, and other government reports and resources. Cited resources are generally concise, easily read, and meant for general audiences. Annotations and images are used to provide context for each resource. Many contributors made Soil and Water Conservation: An Annotated Bibliography possible through their assistance with technical edits, outline development, identifying resources, or writing annotations. Chapter authors are experts and practitioners of soil and water conservation, or students of soil and water conservation who worked under the supervision of the editor, Colby Moorberg. The annotated bibliography is used as the primary text for Kansas State University’s AGRON 635 – Soil and Water Conservation, which is taught by Moorberg.

Success in the world of work depends to a great extent on a person’s ability to communicate. This course will provide learners with practice in occupational writing, both correspondence and reports. Half of the course deals with correspondence, with particular emphasis on employment letters, customer relations and sales messages. The remaining units focus on report preparation, with practice in writing descriptions, instructions, progress reports and proposals.
The material is interesting, and the exercises are relevant to most administrative, supervisory and managerial positions. The approach to study should make the learners work really enjoyable. If the learners are motivated and can commit themselves to doing a good job of the course, they will derive a great deal of benefit from it.

Understanding and Application of Linear Equations

The goal of these lessons is for students to be able to write expressions from word phases, write algebraic equations to represent real-world scenarios, and match linear expressions to word problems. Often students are able to figure out the solutions to mathematical concepts taught in isolation, but are challenged when ask to explain what the answer means in the context of a word problem. This lesson is designed to teach students the relevance of their mathematic answer. Before introducing this lesson, think about some real world relevant examples where the algebraic equations would assist the students in their everyday lives. Have these ready to address the issue of relevance in students’ lives.

Introduction to Arduino: Getting Connected and Blinking LEDs

Microcontrollers are the brains of the electronic world, but in order to play with one, you must first get it connected! For this maker challenge, students learn how to connect their Arduino microcontroller circuit boards to computers. First, students are walked through the connection process, helped to troubleshoot common pitfalls, and write their first Arduino programs (setup and loop functions, semicolons, camel case, pin 13 LED). Then they are given the open-ended challenge to create their own blinking LED code—such as writing Morse code messages and mimicking the rhythm of a heartbeat. This practice helps students become comfortable with the fundamental commands before progressing to more difficult programs.

Poverty in the U.S.

In 1962, an American activist named Michael Harrington wrote a relatively short but influential study on the problem of poverty in the United States. 'The Other America' ultimately found its way into the hands of President John F. Kennedy, and the book had a profound impact on bringing poverty issues to public attention. It ultimately contributed to the launch of the government's "War on Poverty."

TeachableMoment marks the 50 year anniversary, and addresses the ongoing issue, with a series of readings and discussion questions for high school students. Readings one and two, below, give an overview of Michael Harrington's book and consider the state of poverty in the U.S. now. The next pair of readings in the series will examine the debate about who should count as poor in this country and proposals for combating poverty.
