Mindful Brainiac Challenge

In order to introduce some fun, and hopefully get students to practice some of the concepts discussed in class relating to social and emotional intelligence, and mindfulness practices, the Mindful Brainiac Challenge was developed. Students are divided into teams and awarded individual and team points for demonstrating certain behaviors / actions.
Using Class Dojo application, points are awarded from one of the three categories: Cognitive and Metacognitive skills, Social and Emotional Intelligence, and Mindfulness. Teachers collect points from their own observations in class, homework assignments, and reports from students themselves, peers, other teachers and parents. Students are only awarded positive points (so they don't get "punished", and points lead into different milestones that award badges. Throughout the course, different milestones / achievements will receive different rewards, individually and collectively, and by the end of the course, the team with most badges and the individual with most points wins.

We live in an increasingly complex, fast-paced, and volatile world. The stakes have never been higher, and it is no longer enough for scientists to throw information into the public sphere and hope that someone is able to understand and apply it. Indeed, it is now clear that scientists have a moral obligation to spend as much time, thought, and effort in the communication of their knowledge products as they do in the generation of the knowledge itself. If scientific voices are to be heard above the din, and, more importantly, used for personal, public, and political decision-making, then efficient and effective communication is essential. However, science communication, and particularly the communication of risk in the scientific context, is difficult to do well, especially without the appropriate training. This textbook covers many of the principles of science communication, as well as the theory and practice of risk communication, specifically. The content is divided into three main sections: 1) the ‘mission’ (why you are communicating), 2) the ‘message’ (what you are communicating), and 3) the ‘medium’ (how you are communicating). We have tried to include enough diversity of ideas to give you something to ‘chew on’ regardless of your background, education, or experience in communication. However, the textbook is, and will always be, a work in progress. It will expand and mature each year as we continue our communication journey, learning from our students and the world around us.

In this class, students use data and systems knowledge to build models of complex socio-technical systems for improved system design and decision-making. Students will enhance their model-building skills, through review and extension of functions of random variables, Poisson processes, and Markov processes; move from applied probability to statistics via Chi-squared t and f tests, derived as functions of random variables; and review classical statistics, hypothesis tests, regression, correlation and causation, simple data mining techniques, and Bayesian vs. classical statistics. Decision-Making often refers to a multi-stage process that starts with some form of introspection or reflection about a situation in which a person or group of people find themselves. These ruminations usually lead to series of questions that need to be answered, or to a set of data that needs to be collected and analyzed, or to some calculations that need to be performed before someone can be in a position to make informed decisions and take appropriate actions.

In this document, we provide some simple examples of Quantitative Models, which are often found in a decision-making situation. We focus on the use of algebraic equations, probability models, the “Payoff Table” and “Decision Tree” models, to represent situations involving a sequence one or more of decisions over time. Concepts are illustrated with a large set of examples that can be presented during classroom instruction and can be practiced by the students, either individually or in groups, through homework or lab exercises.

Monarch Mystery is an early elementary curricular program that is grounded in a local phenomenon about migrating monarch butterflies and is shared through the story of a migrant girl named Violeta. Combined with the story, this unit uses interactive activities to teach to the Next Generation Science Standards and the Washington State Environmental and Sustainability Education Learning Standards. It is also guided by a framework for Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy. We included literary opportunities to develop ELA skills in support of multilingual learners. Rounding out the program are outdoor activities, arts, and written activities that enable students to practice skills, and build toward an action project informed by their understandings and experiences. Monarch Mystery is an early elementary curricular program created by EarthGen.
