The User-friendly Classroom video training series was created specifically for teaching assistants for whom English is a second language and the USA a second culture by A.C. Kemp, a lecturer in MIT Global Languages.  These videos focus on developing international teaching assistants’ strategies for successful, student-centered communication in the interactive American classroom. These videos demonstrate best practices through authentic examples of successful teaching scenarios, interviews with undergraduates and advice from international teaching assistants.

This lesson provides teachers with support for using text-dependent questions and Common Core literacy strategies to help students derive big ideas and key understandings while developing vocabulary using the text, "The Last Dragon." A young boy, Peter, is hesitant to spend the summer with his great aunt in Chinatown. Peter finds an aging parade dragon in a store and, in restoring it, learns to connect with the dragon and the Chinese community.

This module is aimed at beginners in Mandarin Chinese in semester B (after 11 weeks of study) and allows the student to practice listening and reading skills, as well as practice in grammar. The transcript reader of the listening exercises allows students to identify words/passages they find difficult to understand.

This activity is a creative writing assignment in which first graders create poetry from scientific information about dragonflies.
