A Field Season Gets Underway Set To Weddell Seal Song
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

Weddell seals have a large repertoire of very strange vocalizations–everything from chugs, chirps, trills, and whistles to what sounds like something from outer space. Weddells make these sounds both underwater and on top of the sea ice. Our soundtrack composer Steve Perez used hydrophone recordings the project obtained under NMFS Permit 1032-1917 to interweave with guitar and midi to create an other-worldly composition consisting of some of those Weddell seal vocalizations recorded by the Weddell Population Ecology project. Video field footage obtained by project members Eric Boyd and Terrill Paterson under NMFS Permit 17236. Video editing and production by Mary Lynn Price. Learn more at WeddellSealScience.com!

Fill-in-the-blank Abi Persona

Customizable GenderMag persona: Abi. Abi provides the strongest lens to find inclusiveness issues that disproportionately affect women users. If you choose to use only one persona and your primary motivation is inclusiveness to women, Abi is probably the best first choice. Abi provides the strongest inclusivity lens out of the 3 personas (Abi, Pat, and Tim).

Customizable GenderMag persona: Tim. Tim represents the opposite end of the facet value ranges from the Abi GenderMag persona, so Tim helps to complete the "sweep" of considering a wide range of facet values. For full coverage of the spectrum, Tim is a good second choice after Abi.

Florence Nightingale Collection: Personal Correspondence Classroom Activity

This collection of letters shows Nightingale’s concerns and her challenges with developing policies that would be beneficial to the poor and sick. Nightingale’s primary concern here is sanitation and the care of wounded soldiers. The letters also contain a peek into Nightingale’s private life, describing her views on poetry, plants, and her love of the countryside. Across a series of activities and tasks, students will use the letters as a catalyst to respond to domestic issues and politics during the 1800’s.

From Dream to Reality: Building the Hale Telescope: Primary Source STEAM Project
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating
0.0 stars

The 200-inch Hale Telescope (historically known as the “Palomar Telescope”) at the Palomar Observatory in California represents an amazing feat of engineeringand ingenuity, the result of decades of trial and error. The primary sources in this project describe the last great hurdle in the Hale Telescope’s construction: successfully transporting the 40-ton, 200-inch mirror and its packing materials from upstate New York to the top of Palomar Mountain in southern California. This project is designed for advanced middle school or high school students. It contains a suggested project that puts students in the role of problem-solvers, with students using the actual data points drawn from the 1947 primary sources. Students will learn how to work with a formula, and to manipulate the formula’s variables to achieve different outcomes.

Genetically Modified Insect

The January 2012 issue of PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases presented an Editorial, a Viewpoint, and two accompanying Expert Commentaries that focussed on the application of genetically modified (GM) insects for control of animal and plant diseases. These articles describe the technological advances these tools represent, the regulatory framework, and the societal dialogue that is necessary for their wide-scale application for disease control. Here, we have assembled a collection of articles published in the PLOS journals that describe the technical and applied aspects of GM insects. We also included articles that are not strictly GM, but aim to modify the disease transmission traits of insects through the use of symbiotic microbes.

This science resource covers a variety of topics; however, the specific URL is on Genetics. It has significant explanations on the basic Principles of Genetics, Co-dominance, Incomplete dominance, and Sex-Linked traits. The units have precise and manageable explanations, and there are numerous links and additional resources to support instructors and students to advance learning. The access to videos and online simulations enhances particular areas, and the diverse assessments support mastery of skills.
This is a very purposeful resource on genetics; it is useful to make learning more effective either as an overall instructional method or as an individualized learning supplement.

Guidance for generative AI in education and research
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

Publicly available generative AI (GenAI) tools are rapidly emerging, and the release of iterative versions is outpacing the adaptation of national regulatory frameworks. The absence of national regulations on GenAI in most countries leaves the data privacy of users unprotected and educational institutions largely unprepared to validate the tools.

UNESCO’s first global guidance on GenAI in education aims to support countries to implement immediate actions, plan long-term policies and develop human capacity to ensure a human-centred vision of these new technologies.

The Guidance presents an assessment of potential risks GenAI could pose to core humanistic values that promote human agency, inclusion, equity, gender equality, and linguistic and cultural diversities, as well as plural opinions and expressions.

It proposes key steps for governmental agencies to regulate the use of GenAI tools including mandating the protection of data privacy and considering an age limit for their use. It outlines requirements for GenAI providers to enable their ethical and effective use in education.

The Guidance stresses the need for educational institutions to validate GenAI systems on their ethical and pedagogical appropriateness for education. It calls on the international community to reflect on their long-term implications for knowledge, teaching, learning and assessment.

The publication offers concrete recommendations for policy-makers and educational institutions on how the uses of GenAI tools can be designed to protect human agency and genuinely benefit learners, teachers and researchers.
