Rationale: This activity will provide an alternative to traditional activities on French families offered in a lot of textbooks, and will get students engage with an authentic material: an excerpt from a contemporary Francophone “bande dessinée”. While some students may already know traditional Francophone comics such as Tintin or Astérix, this activity is here to provide them with a more recent and more diverse example. Aya de Yopougon is centered on a young female character growing up in Yop City, a fictional city very similar to writer Marguerite Abouet’s own native city (Abidjan, Ivory Coast). The “reading” phase of this activity is designed to encourage collaborative reading.

Silent Discourse - Interpersonal Writing

This activity provides opportunities for students to communicate with each other, in writing, on a given topic in the target language. The teacher provides a question or a topic and students respond to the original question and/or to each other. The attached document "debate silencioso" provides for an extended exchange between two students, following the arrows, as they respond to each other's responses. The other document can be used in groups of four where each student responds to the question and then, at the teacher's direction, the paper is turned a quarter turn so that each student then sees a classmate's response and can respond to his or her comments, ask a follow up question, add on to the comment, etc. As the paper continues to be turned, the students see additional comments from other group mates and thus have more to respond to. This version works best on large newsprint rather than an 8.5 x 11 paper but the document provides a visual for the teacher.

In either version, the idea is to insist on silence so that students are required to express their ideas in writing in the target language.

Sons & Lettres: A pronunciation method for intermediate-level French

Sons et lettres provides a set of classroom materials to train students to hear and produce the sounds of French and to recognize the regular spellings used to represent those sounds in print. The materials are inspired by a desire to help students feel more confident about their French pronunciation and more at home saying the many French words, familiar and unfamiliar, which they encounter in their studies, in French media and in their travels. In our experience, students are not given sufficient preparation to successfully decipher and pronounce French words. These materials are intended to fill that gap and to clear away the confusion that English speakers often feel when they see French words with seemingly mysterious combinations of letters.

This website has been designed to offer strategies for teaching this seminal work to intermediate-level college students in a way that is dynamic, engaging, and perhaps most importantly highlights the connection between Madame de Lafayette’s seventeenth-century work La Princesse de Clèves and the contemporary social concerns of young people in today’s world. 
There was a recent heated debate in France about the modern relevance of this literary text that began when Nicolas Sarkozy suggested that the study of this text was useless. His comments incited fervent discussion in French academic, artistic, and political circles. The compelling history of the text, along with its importance in contemporary French society and culture, makes the study of this work highly relevant for students.

Overview:  This OER: Understanding Fairytales with a Graphic Organizer was created by Stephanie Werner and as part of the 2024 World Language OER Summer work and training. Educators worked with Chrystal Liu, Nick Ziegler and Dorann Avey to create OER Learning Plans and materials. The attached Lesson Plan and Graphic Organizer is designed for 7-12 World Language Teachers of Low to Mid level Intermediate Spanish, French or German language learners. EFBA is a nonprofit organization promoting bilingualism, specifically by teaching French to children aged 5 to 11 years old, in the San Francisco Bay Area. For its after-school programs for children in the native speaker track, EFBA created free educational tools under open source license.
Cahiers Virgule consist of several educational materials and resources: textbooks for students, teaching guides for teachers, MP3 digital resources for listening activities, and an educational game. They are organized around the educational goals of mastering the language, spelling and grammar, and Francophonic cultural literacy, all in a play-based and collaborative approach. They offer different ways to learn, use, discover, play, and exchange.

To best meet the needs of students and their progress, the textbooks are organized by age group:

“Les petits Francophones”: from 5 to 7 years old - PF1 (completely non-readers) and PF2 (readers in the majority language)
“Les Moyens Francophones”: from 7 to 9 years old – MF1 and MF2
“Les Grands Francophones”: from 9 to 11 years old – GF1 and GF2

This semester, we will read writing about travel and place from Columbus’s Diario through the present. Travel writing has some special features that will shape both the content and the work for this subject: reflecting the point of view, narrative choices, and style of individuals, it also responds to the pressures of a real world only marginally under their control. Whether the traveler is a curious tourist, the leader of a national expedition, or a starving, half-naked survivor, the encounter with place shapes what travel writing can be. Accordingly, we will pay attention not only to narrative texts but to maps, objects, archives, and facts of various kinds.
Our materials are organized around three regions: North America, Africa and the Atlantic world, the Arctic and Antarctic. The historical scope of these readings will allow us to know something not only about the experiences and writing strategies of individual travelers, but about the progressive integration of these regions into global economic, political, and knowledge systems. Whether we are looking at the production of an Inuit film for global audiences, or the mapping of a route across the North American continent by water, these materials do more than simply record or narrate experiences and territories: they also participate in shaping the world and what it means to us.
Authors will include Olaudah Equiano, Caryl Philips, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Joseph Conrad, Jamaica Kincaid, William Least Heat Moon, Louise Erdrich, Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca.
Expeditions will include those of Lewis and Clark (North America), Henry Morton Stanley (Africa), Ernest Shackleton and Robert F. Scott (Antarctica).
