Employment Law

On the one hand, employment law resembles contract law--a matter of private ordering between workers and hirers, or perhaps between unions and employers. On the other hand, employment law has long been seen to implicate fundamental questions of justice--what discrimination means, what workers deserve, and what the balance should be between work and the rest of life.

The discourse around academic integrity has become more prolific and robust, and the nature of, as well as what constitutes academic misconduct has expanded and continues to evolve as the landscape of education and technology changes. Current examples of misconduct behaviours include but are not limited to: copying answers during an assessment, claiming another person’s work as one’s own, unauthorized collaboration, having another person complete an assessment, unauthorized use of online platforms to complete an assessment, purchasing a completed assessment, and falsifying results from experiments.

A Fifty-Year Science Adventure

Short Description:
Originally published in 1976 and newly revised for the 50th anniversary of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study, "The Endless Chain of Nature" follows the scientific adventures of student and professional researchers working in a small "closed" ecosystem in the Hubbard Brook Forest in New Hampshire. Written for middle-school readers and older, "The Endless Chain" introduces key ecological ideas in an engaging story of people solving puzzles and mysteries.

Long Description:
This real-life science adventure opens a window into a forest ecosystem in New Hampshire, and an experiment that has gone on for fifty years — so far.

In a three-hundred-year old old farmhouse near a forest lake filled with fish, tadpoles and splashing children, young people and professionals work side by side to solve puzzles about how land, water, living things, and the climate all fit together and all affect each other. The team includes students, teachers, and leading scientists from around the world.

Together they examine a closed ecosystem in the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest — one of the first Long Term Ecological Research sites. In the past half-century it has led to important discoveries, including what we now know as acid rain. Their work is a fascinating study of the complex relationship between organisms and the environment.

Out in the woods, the team nets birds with the ornithologist, sifts through debris for insects with the entomologist, goes fishing with the ichthyologist, climbs trees with the botanist, chases salamanders with the herpetologist, and digs ancient mud cores out of the bottom of the lake with the paleobotanist. One student researcher — the grandson of a scientist who worked at the Brook in its earlier days — measures trees to help understand what affects their growth.

Using techniques that are both basic and advanced, they carry on experiments begun 50 years ago to see what has changed, and to figure out why. We see the ecology puzzle fit together into a picture of the complex and fascinating chain of nature, and we discover how our lives and actions affect other links in the chain. Surprises are in store in every chapter.

2013 marks the 50th Anniversary of the launching of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study. This pioneering effort to explore the complex ways in which water, air, soil, plants and animals interact began in 1963 in a 3,160 hectare reserve in New Hampshire. It became, and remains today, a world-renowned laboratory yielding many important insights, including identifying the phenomena of acid rain and enhancing the understanding of the impact of climate change on natural systems.

Energy and Human Ambitions on a Finite Planet
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

Where is humanity going? How realistic is a future of fusion and space colonies? What constraints are imposed by physics, by resource availability, and by human psychology? Are default expectations grounded in reality?

This textbook, written for a general-education audience, aims to address these questions without either the hype or the indifference typical of many books. The message throughout is that humanity faces a broad sweep of foundational problems as we inevitably transition away from fossil fuels and confront planetary limits in a host of unprecedented ways—a shift whose scale and probable rapidity offers little historical guidance.

Salvaging a decent future requires keen awareness, quantitative assessment, deliberate preventive action, and—above all—recognition that prevailing assumptions about human identity and destiny have been cruelly misshapen by the profoundly unsustainable trajectory of the last 150 years. The goal is to shake off unfounded and unexamined expectations, while elucidating the relevant physics and encouraging greater facility in quantitative reasoning.

After addressing limits to growth, population dynamics, uncooperative space environments, and the current fossil underpinnings of modern civilization, various sources of alternative energy are considered in detail— assessing how they stack up against each other, and which show the greatest potential. Following this is an exploration of systemic human impediments to effective and timely responses, capped by guidelines for individual adaptations resulting in reduced energy and material demands on the planet’s groaning capacity. Appendices provide refreshers on math and chemistry, as well as supplementary material of potential interest relating to cosmology, electric transportation, and an evolutionary perspective on humanity’s place in nature.

Giving Learners a Premier Learning Experience No Matter Where

Online learning and teaching have been a part of CSI for many years. To give just one example from one discipline, in the 1990s, Jeff Fox and Ken Bingham cobbled together various digital tools to allow students to access instruction, discussions, feedback, readings, and more. Long before Canvas, Moodle, or any other LMS (learning management system), when email was still a relative novelty, Jeff and Ken and other forward-looking instructors were harnessing the power of the web to reach and teach CSI’s students.

The Online Learning Committee of the college is the latest iteration of an institutional effort to improve online education that has been around nearly as long as online teaching. Long-time employees will remember the E-Learning Committee, and similar groups comprised of faculty, staff, support folks, and students working to make online learning as good as it can be.

This text is the latest in a long line of initiatives intended to regularize a level of instructional excellence at CSI. In fact, we hope this text will give you the resources you need to be the best online teacher you can be and continue to build CSI’s reputation as a leading and innovative institution in Idaho.

The text provides four areas of focus for you to consider. CONTENT | COURSE DESIGN | FEEDBACK | and CONNECTIONS. We believe that almost any measure of engaged, exemplary online instruction can be found in one of these “buckets.”

Within these categories, we have identified just three items (for now) for your consideration as you tackle the taxing work of teaching online. Let’s call these “essential practices.” Read on to see what these practices are and to see some examples of their implementation.

“Engaged” and “exemplary” practices will be published later.

Rating
0.0 stars

Effective Research Data Management (RDM) is a key component of research integrity and reproducible research, and its importance is increasingly emphasised by funding bodies, governments, and research institutions around the world. However, many researchers are unfamiliar with RDM best practices, and research support staff are faced with the difficult task of delivering support to researchers across different disciplines and career stages. What strategies can institutions use to solve these problems?

Engaging Researchers with Data Management is an invaluable collection of 24 case studies, drawn from institutions across the globe, that demonstrate clearly and practically how to engage the research community with RDM. These case studies together illustrate the variety of innovative strategies research institutions have developed to engage with their researchers about managing research data. Each study is presented concisely and clearly, highlighting the essential ingredients that led to its success and challenges encountered along the way. By interviewing key staff about their experiences and the organisational context, the authors of this book have created an essential resource for organisations looking to increase engagement with their research communities.

This handbook is a collaboration by research institutions, for research institutions. It aims not only to inspire and engage, but also to help drive cultural change towards better data management. It has been written for anyone interested in RDM, or simply, good research practice.
