Spanish M200-Intermediate Spanish I: Open For Antiracism (OFAR)
Unrestricted Use

Rating

The Open for Antiracism (OFAR) Program – co-led by CCCOER and College of the Canyons – emerged as a response to the growing awareness of structural racism in our educational systems and the realization that adoption of open educational resources (OER) and open pedagogy could be transformative at institutions seeking to improve. The program is designed to give participants a workshop experience where they can better understand anti-racist teaching and how the use of OER and open pedagogy can empower them to involve students in the co-creation of an anti-racist classroom. The capstone project involves developing an action plan for incorporating OER and open pedagogy into a course being taught in the spring semester. OFAR participants are invited to remix this template to design and share their projects and plans for moving this work forward.

Spatial Analysis of Raster Data - An Antarctic Example
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

In this activity, students use 1:5,000,000 scale continent-wide Antarctic data sets of surface elevation, ice thickness, bedrock topography, rock outcroppings, and coast lines to examine the effects of ice removal and sea level rise on the physiography of the continent. Datasets come from the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the BEDMAP project.

The emphasis of the exercise is on the nuts and bolts of some of the tools in the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension for analysis and display of raster data, with considerably less emphasis on higher order thinking skills. Quoting from the introduction "What does Antarctica look like beneath the ice? A continent of mountain ranges, deep valleys, plains, inland seas, offshore islands and the like exists there, for the most part invisible but for a few features that protrude above the ice. Wouldn't it be nice to have a topographic map in shaded relief of Antarctica without the ice and with oceans filling areas that are below sea level? Wouldn't it be even nicer to have such a map that accounted for the isostatic rise of the land surface that would occur after the weight of the ice was removed? What would the continent look like if sea level rose by an amount equal to the volume of the water locked up as ice? How much ice is there? Digital data are available to make such maps and answers these questions, as is software to do so. Let's have a crack at it!"

The exercise was originally written for ArcGIS 9.0 ArcInfo with Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst extensions. It is entirely compatible with ArcGIS 9.3 ArcInfo with Spatial Analyst and 3D Analyst extensions. 3D Analyst is used to calculate ice area/volume (a minor component of the exercise) but is otherwise not required

Special Education Law Kahoot!

This game is designed to test, reinforce, and enhance students' understanding of Special Education Law. I've used it in several different ways: as a game that students play in class, with a prize for the winning student or team (playing the game and discussing the correct answers takes about one hour of class time); as a closed-book quiz that students take in class, followed by discussion of the correct answers (again, about one hour of class time); and as an open-book assignment that students complete before class, followed by discussion of the correct answers in class (about 30 minutes of class time).

Species At Risk Education Kit
Only Sharing Permitted
CC BY-NC-ND
Rating
0.0 stars

In our new Species at Risk (SAR) education kit, each lesson addresses a species at risk through an Ocean Wise conservation initiative. Students will learn about the humpback whale and climate change, the killer whale and ocean pollution, the great white shark and bycatch, the hawksbills sea turtle and plastic pollution, and the sea otter and loss of kelp habitat, plus ways to take action to protect them! Equipped with the proper knowledge and tools, students will acquire an impactful learning experience to empower them to become ocean champions and stewards for species at risk.

The Earth’s ocean and its interconnected systems depend on marine species to maintain the efficiency and balance of the functioning of their ecosystems. Their role in the ocean has a direct impact on its health and our own. And yet, every day, thousands of animals fall victim to anthropogenic threats imposed on the ocean by human activity. It is going to take a deep, transformational change in humanity’s consciousness and behaviours regarding our oceans to ensure the protection of species. We believe this is possible by providing climate and conservation education to our youth to raise awareness on the interconnectedness between our lives and the ocean, and the importance of the role that each species holds on our planet.
