"A new study published in _The American Journal of Sports Medicine_ suggests that adding more shoulder-strengthening exercise to current nonoperative care protocols for subacromial impingement does _not _improve outcomes. Nonoperative care including physical therapy is the first-line treatment for subacromial impingement, also known as shoulder impingement. Although shoulder strengthening is important for recovery, the current exercise protocols don’t always provide sufficient relief. In addition, decompression surgery is no longer recommended for refractory cases, leaving patients with fewer options and increasing the need for better nonoperative care. To determine whether more shoulder-strengthening exercise might help patients achieve relief, the study’s authors randomly divided 200 patients with chronic shoulder pain due to impingement into a control group and an intervention group. The patients in the control group received normal nonoperative care..."

A learning activity for the "Do You Know That Clouds Have Names?" book in the Elementary GLOBE series. Using information from the book and their observations, students construct a sky scene with trees and buildings as reference points on the ground and cloud types ordered by altitude in the sky. Students will describe clouds using their own vocabulary and will then correlate their descriptions with the standard classifications of cloud types used by the GLOBE Program. The purpose of the activity is to help students identify some of the characteristics of clouds and to enable students to observe clouds, describe them in a common vocabulary, and compare their descriptions with the official cloud names. Students will be able to identify cloud types using standard cloud classification names. They will know that the names used for the clouds are based on three factors: their shapes, the altitude at which they occur, and whether they are producing precipitation.

How can we design more reliable systems to meet our communities’ energy needs? This unit is designed to introduce students to the concept of energy transfer in a relevant and grounded context: the Texas power crisis of February 2021. Students read articles and wonder about the complex social, environmental, and physical realities that led to such a crisis. They figure out how energy transfers between systems from a generator to our communities, and what makes an energy source reliable. This allows the class to model and explain what happened in Texas at multiple scales, from the electrons in the wires to the power companies making difficult decisions to maintain stability. Students consider engineering tradeoffs, criteria, and constraints inherent in making decisions about our energy systems, and apply them in a culminating task: design a reliable energy solution that meets our communities' needs, as articulated by interviews with friends and family members. The task is designed to give students the tools to speak up in their local and global community for a better energy future, one that aligns with their own values, and those of their families.

This module is thought of to be used by teachers and students. It's main area of concern is rotational motion and mass moment of inertia, two concepts which in my experience as a teacher, often makes students nervous due to the seemingly very abstract quantities involved in rotational motion. The goal of the following module is to bridge the gap between the students preliminary working knowledge in classical mechanics, while providing a hands-on approach to teaching the subject of the kinetics of rotating, solid objects. Learning ObjectivesIntroduce students to the fundamentals of the physics of rotating objects, with a suitable mix of theoretical and practical problem solving activites involving torque and mass moment of inertia.Allow students to relate their newfound understanding to real world situations where the theory allows students to analyse rotational motion in everyday situations as well as engineering applications and beyond.Enable the students to work through the concepts required before potentially proceeding with more advanced topics such as rotational energy and angular momentum.
