For writing center and writing program scholars, administrators, and practitioners hungry for changing how we labor and how we teach writing, this book details several interventions, pedagogies, and programmatic approaches that place wellness, vulnerability, and anti-racist community care at the forefront of our work. For practitioners outside of the United States, I hope that this book generates meaningful conversations about wellness challenges and care opportunities and leads to interventions that are culturally-specific and site-specific. Of course, as I have detailed in my other work on wellness and labor, the pandemic has given new urgency to these conversations and has upped their stakes. This book, then, is an artifact of a pre-pandemic world. While subsequent revisions have woven in pandemic-specific reflections and information, we are still sorting through the wreckage of a harrowing year. In years to come, I hope that we will look back on this period of uncertainty and fear, and process how the pandemic reshaped us: our work, our tutoring and teaching practices, our attitudes about our institutions, our profession, our programmatic goals. I also hope we examine what the pandemic failed to reshape and the many aspects of the academy that the pandemic adversely shaped.

In “Puerto Rico Obituary,” poet and activist Pedro Pietri calls upon colonized folks to “kill, kill, kill the landlord of their cracked skull” by celebrating their identities, using “…their white supremacy bibles for toilet paper…”

Meditation is a practice that can teach us how to “see what is” beyond the messages we receive and, in that way, can be a pathway to internal decolonization and liberation. A radically accessible care praxis, mindfulness pushes us to question if we are unruly, unworthy, or if that is a message we have been sent by capitalist, patriarchal, white supremacy.

In this audio short, Caitlin invites us to fake it ‘til we make it, breathe into bell hooks’ teacher-healer ideal, and to kill, kill, kill the landlord that tells us we are less worthy of peace and joy; that ease is not our birthright.

This resource incorporates and contextualizes material from Writing Spaces. Writing Spaces is, as Dr. Daniel likes to say, the “OG” of all things commercial-free-textbooks for first-year writing. If terms like “book series” and “peer-reviewed essays” or “by teachers for students” or “free” sound reminiscent of Who Teaches Writing, it is because Writing Spaces was and is the inspiration for Who Teaches Writing. Who Teaches Writing was no brain child of ours, but just the end result of us keeping up with good practice from smart people who have been doing this work for many years. Dr. Daniel had the good fortune to serve as web editor for Writing Spaces for a time, and he knows their work well. While we borrowed their process to create our textbook, this textbook uses existing Writing Spaces articles and organizes them around the English 1213 curriculum, along with abstracts and introductions from our editorial team (you’ll be meeting them in each section) to deliver you another commercial free textbook. Not only is it entirely possible to create free textbooks for FYC students, it has been for a while. This is because, well, Writing Spaces has been at it for a minute; as FYC Director, Dr. Daniel does not believe in unnecessary textbook costs.
