It was specifically designed to help students increase their depth of knowledge of impulse, momentum, and the differences in energy and momentum conservation between elastic and inelastic collisions. The project required students to design, build, and then use as a basis to prove their applied mastery of impulse and momentum, a contraption that would accurately predict the 2-dimensional motion of colliding objects, as well as to demonstrate the value of modern automobile design features in terms of safety. By applying the knowledge about combustion chemistry that they gain during the pre-activity reading (or lecture presentation, alternatively), students predict how the emissions from various vehicles will differ in terms of pollutants (CO2, VOCs and NO2), and explain why. After data collection, students examine the time series plots as a class—a chance to interpret the results and compare them to their predictions. This interactive textbook provides an educational resource into computational design for (industrial) designers. The book focusses on the use of computational design of products/artifacts at a human scale, which might be contrasted by the architectural/build environment scale – a domain which also extensively utilizes computational design principles and tools. Throughout the book, we make use of (commercial) computer-aided-design software, namely Rhinoceros®, and specifically the (build-in) module Grasshopper®.
The lessons and knowledge base offered in this book focus on topics that are specifically relevant for and/or attuned to product design (scale), which are categorized in relation to its goal (e.g. design for personalized fit/comfort/aesthetics), by its means (e.g. design for digital fabrication), or for its role in the design process (e.g. for design exploration or design simulation).
The book is intended for students both at bachelor and master level. As we believe in a learning-by-doing approach, we aimed for a hands-on, easy-to-get-started set of introductory lessons, which is complemented with a knowledge base. The introductory lessons do not assume any specific prior skills or knowledge (in general or with Rhino Grasshopper) to get started. Yet, (some) experience with computer-aided design (CAD), programming, data processing, and/or mathematics will likely be helpful to really delve into the more complex topics, such as those covered in the knowledge base.
The book is currently used as course material in two courses taught at Industrial Design Engineering: “Prototyping with/for Digital Fabrication” (BSc level, part of the Minor Advanced Prototyping), and “Computational design for Digital Fabrication” (MSc level, Elective). The content in this book is in part based on course materials from the above-mentioned courses, which have been been taught to and applied by students with diverse (technical) backgrounds (e.g. industrial design, mechanical engineering, computer science, and electrical engineering). Some therapies, like those used in tissue engineering, are designed to promote angiogenesis and new tissue growth, while other therapies, such as those designed to fight cancer, aim to suppress angiogenesis— a lifeline for tumor cells. Unfortunately, these therapies aren’t always effective. Now, a new mathematical model could help researchers understand what molecular levers to pull to effectively modulate angiogenesis. Trained on published experimental data, the model predicted the effects of activating two common targets of angiogenesis-based therapies: vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF, and fibroblast growth factor, or FGF. Computational experiments showed that the two factors modify both the ERK signaling pathway, which is linked to cell proliferation, and the Akt signaling pathway, which is associated with cell survival and migration..."

The computer program's simulation of a Sonoran desert community should ultimately strengthen the student's comprehension of what is required for a natural ecosystem to sustain itself (remain in balance). This computer simulation program has great flexibility. It allows the student to manipulate the population numbers of five Sonoran Desert species. A species natural history attachment provides vital information for the students to familiarize themselves with each species' behaviors, its niche and food resource needs. The program includes two producers, the Saguaro cactus and the Ironwood Tree. It also includes 3 consumers, but their interactions both toward the producers and each other differ. The community's ability to remain in balance and sustain all five species so that none die out rests on the student's assessment skills enabling him to correctly identify these dependencies. The student learns by trial and error as he continues to fine tune the ecosystem that he maintains stewardship of.
