StoryWorks: Beautiful Agitators

StoryWorks develops inclusive and transformative educational theater experiences that provide students with the opportunity to examine our country’s civil rights history. Through content consistent with school curriculum standards, the program engages students in experiential learning and inspires them to ask deeper questions about the historical underpinnings behind contemporary issues. The process creates pathways to civic engagement, creates lasting memories and instills a tangible sense of social belonging. This StoryWorks educational project is built around Beautiful Agitators, a theatrical play about Vera Mae Pigee, a hair stylist and business owner in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and one of the unsung heroes of the civil rights era. Using her beauty parlor as a hub for Delta-based organizing and resistance, Pigee operated her salon by day and then transformed it into a clandestine center for civil rights organization and education in the evenings. Known for her big hats and larger than life personality, Mrs. Pigee led the direct action that registered nearly 6,000 African Americans to vote in the region. Although Pigee was largely left out of the history books, along with many women of the movement, our play Beautiful Agitators and accompanying curriculum revives her legacy, highlighting her methods and tactics. Inspired by the innovative K-12 civil rights education standards developed by the Mississippi Civil Rights Commission. Our commitment is to expand upon the standards by further developing content related to social justice, power relations, environmental justice, diversity, equity, mutual respect, and civic engagement. Beautiful Agitators combines inquiry with higher-order thinking skills of analysis, evaluation and synthesis. Set in a beauty parlor owned and operated by a Black woman in the Mississippi Delta, our curriculum is based on our investigation into primary sources and their relationship to critical moments in the national movement. This foundation of historical context allows for students and educators to find contemporary parallels which further engage learners to reflect upon the legacy of the civil rights movement and the struggles that we, as citizens, continue to grapple with today.View the complete play Beautiful Agitators on the StoryWorks Theater site.Implementation1. Beautiful Agitators Performance Classroom watches a prerecorded, staged reading of the play Beautiful Agitators, which was created and performed by artists from the Mississippi Delta, home of Vera Mae Pigee.2. Lesson Plan Activities Following the eight-lesson plan structure, students will read aloud or act out scenes from the play. This participatory interaction with the text and the historical events promotes a high level of engagement from the students and encourages experiential learning. These activities directly correspond to scenes in the play and to specific content area standards. Teacher leads guided discussions and helps to explain the historical context and theme of each scene. Students/actors have the opportunity to share their experiences having portrayed these historical figures.

SYNOPSIS: In this lesson, students make personal connections to fire, understand how climate change is making wildfires worse in Oregon and across the globe, and create a wildfire solution presentation to promote a prevention or preparation strategy.

SCIENTIST NOTES: This lesson allows students to learn about the causes of wildfire and how they are induced by climate change. It also highlights locations at risk to wildfires in Oregon and ways students can develop tactics to promote effective management of wildfire events. The archival data on wildfires will enable them to interpret wildfire hotspots for contingency planning. This lesson is very engaging and is recommended for classroom use.

POSITIVES:
-This lesson can be taught in a language arts class or a science class.
-Students make a personal connection to fire before learning about climate change’s impact on wildfires.
-Students promote a prevention or preparation strategy to share with their class, school, or community.

ADDITIONAL PREREQUISITES:

I teach at a dual language school in New Haven formerly known as Christopher Columbus Family Academy. It is a school composed of almost all Hispanic students and designed on the exterior to resemble a ship. There is a large bust in front of the building of a navigator sighting land, an event commemorated on a nearby plaque celebrating the bravery and exploration of Columbus and his crew. The intended metaphor seems clear enough; the young students within the hull of this ship are also explorers of sorts. The school has since changed its controversial name, but the irony of the metaphor remains; students trapped within the hull of a vessel steered by imperialist authorities.

This unit would have the students up in the masts instead; to have them explore the world and map their journey through it, to make them navigators of their own identities and values. This unit introduces the concept of a cartography of the self. That is, by using the techniques and tools of mapmaking applied to our personal lives and literary stories, we can develop a much more clear and relevant sense of our own history, experiences, values, relationships, hopes, and fears. The aim of this practice is to give teachers and students, through the creation of a series of Life-Maps, a deeper understanding of who they are, what they value, where they wish to go, and who they wish to become. Map making of this kind is fundamentally empowering, as it necessitates the act of naming and ordering the world.

CHN 102 is a continuation of CHN 101. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in standard Mandarin Chinese are further developed. This introduction treats poetry as a manifestation of language in general, poems being themselves the manifestation of poetry, which exists in bits and pieces in all ways of using words. In its historical overview it traces the changing ways that poetry has presented itself–how it has existed and what has been expected of it and how it has functioned–from the late sixteenth century through the twentieth. One chapter is devoted to the ways the women have been treated in poetry from the time of Chaucer to now. Each chapter is designed to occupy one week of a full-semester course.

The course, intended for students with no programming experience, provides the foundations of programming in MATLAB®. Concept Note for the 2023 Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation

In the Middle Belt of Nigeria, three major language families converge in a region with cultural diversity rivaling the Amazon Basin. According to Ethnologue, there are 340 distinct languages. Each is accompanied by Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), including music and dance, poetry and puppetry, handicrafts, and healing practices. The region has received comparatively little attention from scholars. Countless traditions remain unknown and undocumented. Only the Tiv’s Kwagh-Hir theatrical tradition has been inscribed by UNESCO, leaving an urgent need for expanded cultural heritage preservation efforts. This is a project proposal for cultural preservation in the central region of Nigeria.

Each is accompanied by Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), including music and dance, poetry and puppetry, handicrafts, and healing practices. The region has received comparatively little attention from scholars. Countless traditions remain unknown and undocumented. Only the Tiv’s Kwagh-Hir theatrical tradition has been inscribed by UNESCO, leaving tremendous potential for new inscriptions.

ICH is one of Nigeria’s great treasures, yet artifacts and archeological sites dominate discussions of preservation while vulnerable traditions languish, often disappearing without a trace. Many Middle Belt communities are eager to share their traditions but do not have resources to do so. In contrast, Yorùbá is among the most widely studied indigenous and diasporic cultures. Ethnic minorities have been marginalized for centuries by slave raiding, land encroachment, and economic exclusion. Surviving communities deserve the benefits of cultural preservation and should be celebrated for their distinct and resilient cultures at home and in diaspora. In 2021, our team recorded musical practices that strongly resemble American genres like Delta Blues and Funk.

We will utilize American expertise to build capacity among Nigerian field researchers reflecting the Fulbright-Hays Act as a basis for the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation. The project will bring HBCU faculty and students into the orbit of ICH stakeholders. HBCUs have a long-standing history and vested interest in welcoming African-born faculty and students and appreciating the cultural diversity they bring to diaspora communities. Engaging HBCU students in cultural heritage preservation will be a focus of the project, leveraging American technical skills with Nigerian cultural competencies to support US Mission Goals.

Our documentation drive will produce thousands of audiovisual primary sources with the potential to fuel knowledge- and creativity-based economic growth. We will collaborate with participating communities on a three-phase ethnographic process: (1) Inventory, (2) Documentation, and (3) Preventive Conservation. Grant products will be disseminated widely, benefitting the communities, the American and Nigerian public, and scholars in a variety of fields. The Middle Belt faces an array of challenges, including climate change, substance abuse, pastoralist conflict, and religious fundamentalism. The US Mission’s objective of promoting peaceful dialogue will be lived through partnership with CONAECDA, a coalition of community development associations formed in recognition of the UN’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Cultural preservation will promote stability through inclusive education, interethnic and intergenerational conviviality, and constructive identity formation among young people.
