Critical Biliteracy – CABE
Read the Fine Print
Educational Use
Rating
0.0 stars

In the context of current discourse about literacy, the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) has developed a theoretical framework to support educators in the pedagogical clarity and critical awareness necessary to reframe bilingualism as an asset and to cultivate literacy and biliteracy. With so much research and discourse which does not include current research and best practice for multilingual learners and programs, CABE’s framework seeks to include biliteracy in conversations around literacy. Our visual metaphor of a tree is a reminder of the organic nature of literacy, the unique features of the bilingual brain and the assets our multilingual learners bring, the themes of effective literacy from the CA ELA/ELD Framework, and how the teaching and learning environment and high leverage instructional strategies can effectively cultivate biliteracy.

According to Montenegro & Jankowski, 2017, culturally responsive assessment is an assessment that is mindful of the student populations the institution/school serves, using language that is appropriate for all students when developing learning outcomes, acknowledging students’ differences in the planning phases of an assessment, and being intentional in using assessment tools and results to improve learning for all students.  This module will provide explicit instructions to guide your thinking about the relationship between assessment and instruction. The goal of this course is to introduce K-12 Educators and Higher Education faculty to using standards and assessment alignment to support all types of learners.
