Media Literacy Challenge: Writing Your Own Argument
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating
0.0 stars

This lesson will challenge learners to critically read and evaluate news articles presenting different positions on a single issue that the learner takes interest in. The learner will then be challenged to formulate their own opinion by refining their own argument on the issue. The target audience of learners for this lesson constitute the Career and College Readiness Standards Grade Level E (9-12) in their reading and writing abilities. Learners will hone practical skills by engaging in this lesson, such as how to critically engage with news and media, being able to succinctly summarize larger pieces of information, and using information to write a structured argument based on their own opinions. These skills will have practical applications for everyday life, reading and writing the GED, and when applying for jobs that require information processing.

This three-part activity is designed for college-level intermediate Spanish classes with specific reference to Spanish-English bilinguals. Section one facilitates a review of Spanish grammar (e.g., article-noun agreement, accent and spelling/pronunciation rules), while also raising cultural awareness (e.g.,  stereotypes). Section two situates the lesson in business marketing themes and vocabulary by addressing slogans and logos. The student is asked to create their own design and to avoid grammatical errors and stereotypes. Finally, in section three, the student will compose a formal email to the "marketing manager" in order to discuss the shortcomings of the design of the original merchandise and to introduce their own design improvements.

This is a repository of various sites where OER materials can be found related to art history. Some, like that for the Smithsonian Museum, is useful for finding specific objects and information about them held by that museum. Other sites like Art Story (reviewed elsewhere on OER Commons) are more general textual sites for art historical periods. It is a good starting place for finding OER materials.

Metamorphism of siliceous dolostone: An example from the Alta stock, Utah
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

This exercise, based on a suite of rocks from the contact metamorphic aureole of the Alta stock near Salt Lake City, Utah, is constructed for a mid to upper level undergraduate petrology course and does not require access to rocks and thin sections. It assumes students have already had a course in mineralogy and are familiar with photomicrographs, plotting mineral compositions on ternary diagrams, the phase rule, and Schreinemaker's rules. Some of these concepts (e.g., Schreinemaker's rules) could be introduced as part of this activity. Students who complete this exercise should be able to identify mineral assemblages common to metamorphosed siliceous dolostones, determine appropriate chemical systems to describe and plot minerals, infer metamorphic reactions from progressive changes in mineral assemblages, identify metamorphic reactions responsible for producing isograds mapped in the field, understand how rock and fluid compositions control mineral assemblages, and infer the temperature and fluid composition evolution of the Alta stock aureole based on T-X(CO2)diagrams.
