Structure, Function, and Information Processing - 1st Grade1-LS1-1. Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive , grow, and meet their needs. Objective: Student will match each object with its animal counterpart. What animal does each object resemble? This is the third lesson in the science unit Plant and Animal Structure and Survival. The students made a comparison book and will be used as a resource. This book was made to compare how animal parts look to human parts and their functions. Using their science journal, students will review the labeling of animal parts and plant parts. Now using that prior knowledge, students will match pictures of objects with animals.

In this lab report writing assignment, students will use the scientific method to solve a real life problem from their own lives. Students use the scientific method to record observations, develop a hypothesis, and set up their experimental design, which they then actually carry out. This approach allows students to practice using the process of science without the intimidation of scientific terms and concepts.

Using two sets of flubber, one representing the Earth and one representing a glacier, demonstrate how the crust sinks and rebounds to the weight of a glacier, and how this motion can be measured using GPS.Flubber is a rubbery elastic substance, a non-Newtonian elasco-plastic fluid, that flows under gravity, but breaks when under high stress. Flubber is useful for demonstrating a wide range of Earth and glacier processes.

After a preliminary discussion of hotspots (emphasizing the generic term melting anomalies), the mantle plume hypothesis, and alternative hypotheses, students are assigned roles for a debate on the mantle plume controversy. Students conduct an in-class debate, presenting arguments from opposite sides of the plume debate. After the debate students write a reflection paper on their perspective on the debate.

As the human population of India is growing, demand of food is increasing, but there are very less cultivable lands left. Hence there is an urgent need to improve the livestock productivity in managing breeding, feeding and health. Female offspring are preferred by the herd owners than male offspring. Production of desired sex offspring is the major challenge and primary requirement for profitable and sustainable livestock farming. Desired sexed offspring production offers breeding approach to maximize the animal production by increasing the female animal population.

The Search Strategies lesson is mapped to the Searching as Strategic Exploration Frame and introduces the concept of strategic searching in order to use search tools more effectively. By understanding strategic searching techniques, students will be able to not only compose an initial search query, but will be able to refine and revise their search in order to locate relevant sources. In this lesson students will learn how to:
Identify keywords and search terms
Strategically combine search terms using Boolean operators and punctuation
Evaluate search results to apply useful search refinements

Searchable Pacific Northwest History provides a comprehensive examination of our past that includes geology, Native American culture and traditions, and history from earliest times to beyond 2000 C.E. This searchable chronological series is designed to be interactive making it easy for students to find and record specific information quickly to generate a personal study of history.Traditionally, history is taught as isolated events rather than as interconnected episodes. Multiple events may occur simultaneously but presenting the interaction is problematic. This approach misrepresents the context in which historical events occur. Time is distorted as activities that take months or years are condensed into paragraphs or pages creating an incomplete sense of the effort involved. The internet opens a vast resource of historical material enriching our understanding of the past. Searchable Pacific Northwest History provides students a door into our past by using a computer to study history. Rather than learning about history students can now learn from history through research and writing their own narrative.
