This workshop explores the potential of media technology and the Internet to enhance communication and transform city design and community development in inner-city neighborhoods. The class introduces a variety of methods for describing or representing a place and its residents, for simulating actions and changes, for presenting visions of the future, and for engaging multiple actors in the process of envisioning change and guiding action. Students will engage two neighborhoods: the Mill Creek neighborhood of West Philadelphia, PA, and the Brightwood/Northend neighborhood of Springfield, MA. Students will meet real people working on real projects, put theory into practice, and reflect on insights gained in the process. Our hope is that student work will contribute to new initiatives in both communities.
The class Web site can be found here: Media Technology and City Design and Development. It is sponsored by the West Philadelphia Landscape Project and the Center for Reflective Community Practice.

TED Studies, created in collaboration with Wiley, are curated video collections – supplemented by rich educational materials – for students, educators and self-guided learners. In Covering World News, media executives, journalists and authors explore how our ability to understand and participate in a global society is helped or hindered by Western media coverage of world events. As technology and a tough economy change the way mainstream media companies do business, will international news be an albatross or an asset?

A Modern How To Manual For Student Activists for Public Health and Social Justice

Short Description:
This manual will provide straightforward “how to” instruction on how to be an advocate for change in public health policy. By providing actual steps that students can take to make a difference, it will be a beginner’s guide to individual and grassroots activism. Additionally, it will include how to professionally employ modern tools, such as social media platforms, in their advocacy endeavors.

Long Description:
This manual will provide straightforward “how to” instruction on how to be an advocate for change in public health policy. By providing actual steps that students can take to make a difference, it will be a beginner’s guide to individual and grassroots activism. Additionally, it will include how to professionally employ modern tools, such as social media platforms, in their advocacy endeavors.

This modern approach to activism is crucial: most advocacy manuals focus on traditional forms of outreach, such as in-person lobbying, letter-writing campaigns, public group demonstrations, and phone banking. Thus, most manuals fall short of the tools that literally lie at the new generation’s fingertips: social media. In light of movements such as Black Lives Matter, which took place largely online amidst a pandemic, this manual informs students how to educate themselves and others of a cause as well as take direct action—all from the comfort and safety of home/wherever they charge their phone. By using accessible language for novice public health activists, the manual also intends to break down the barriers of intimidation students may face when they are not yet fully immersed in public health/political jargon.

Other publications/textbooks are costly and/or not available through Amazon and mainstream bookstores and are therefore, inaccessible. Furthermore, these textbooks are dense and lengthy, intimidating students who are just yet beginning their journey in public health activism. While most manuals available currently focus on in-person lobbying scripts and formal letters-to-the-editor, this manual adapts to students’ pandemic lifestyle in an age where Twitter and TikTok are viewed more regularly than a newspaper–all while referencing traditional sources.

While the manual intends to reach a broad audience of diverse backgrounds, it will still draw from formidable sources and leaders in the field of advocacy work and public health, such as Martin Luther King Jr. , Paulo Freire, and Eugene Bardarch. Incorporating their pedagogies in simple digestible form will hopefully encourage students to further explore the larger works available from this historical groundbreaking leaders and minds.

Finally, while this manual is aimed towards students in the field of public health, it is relevant to a broad and diverse audience. The logic and tactics presented in this manual are applicable to a wide range of fields and purposes.

Module 12 is comprised of Stage 5 of the semester-long capstone project. In Stage 5, students compile, organize, summarize and synthesize the data and information they've collected through the semester about their assigned food region into a final website or presentation. As outlined in the diagram below, the final website (or presentation) should summarize the physical and human environment of the food region and assess the current status of the regional food system. Students must then discuss future scenarios for their region for temperature and human population growth. Based on their research on the regional food systems, students will assess the resilience and vulnerabilities of the exiting systems to the future scenarios. Finally, students will propose strategies to increase the sustainability and resilience of the regional food systems.

My Interdisciplinary Perspective on Climate Change [Natural Sciences]
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

Rating
0.0 stars

This assignment titled “My Interdisciplinary Perspective on Climate Change” was developed in Fall 2020 as the signature assignment of the STEM Learning Community LC50 for students enrolled in the Biology program of the Natural Sciences department, at LaGuardia Community College, CUNY. The assignment targets Integrative Learning and Global Learning Core Competencies, and Digital/Oral Communication Abilities.
For this STEM Cluster, “Climate Change” is the shared theme that connects learning from the different disciplines and helps build students’ overall knowledge on an imperative issue that our planet currently faces. Work on this assignment entails a narrated digital student presentation on the various aspects of Climate Change such as causes, global effects and manifestations, and possible remedial solutions or suggested actions. Students also practice summarizing the research and learning on this theme from the various courses undertaken in the first semester.
The main goal of this signature assignment is to make connections among the ideas, experiences and learning acquired among the different courses, assignments and co-curricular activities of this semester that contributed to the students’ understanding of this global phenomenon. This high-stakes assignment is worth 20% of the final grade in NSF 101: First Year Seminar for Natural Sciences (program-core course). Students are guided by all four instructors of the Learning Community, which comprises of the courses- NSF 101, MAT 115: College Algebra and Trigonometry, ENG 101: Composition I, and HUC 106: Public Speaking, through a 12-week scaffolded process to complete work and showcase their findings as a well-informed Biology major and responsible citizen of society. This assignment meets the NSF101 learning objectives and helps the students to hone their skills on the targeted Core Competencies (Global/Integrative Learning) and Communication Abilities (Digital/Oral), thereby increasing their chances of being successful in the subsequent 200-level classes of their major.
LaGuardia's Core Competencies and Communication Abilities
Student artifacts were deposited for this assignment at the end of the semester for college-wide Benchmark Readings 2021, and the Fall 2020 Learning Communities Seminar (as the LC assignment). Due to the serious COVID-related situation in New York state in Fall 2020, including high incidence of the disease and the associated challenging and technical issues at some students’ end, more emphasis was placed on helping the students learn how to prepare a digital presentation embodying their work on science, data analysis, writing and communication skills, while incorporating elements of integrative and global learning from all four classes on Climate Change. However, when the assignment is implemented again in the future, both Digital and Oral Communication Abilities will be fostered in all student work. It is noteworthy that some students managed to cover both these abilities in their work in Fall 2020 also.

"The digital age has created the need for a new kind of literacy-a literacy that empowers news consumers to determine whether information is credible, reliable and truthful. This is not just a skill; it is a new core competency for the 21st century. So-called "fake news" is hard to spot and spreads easily, leading to disagreements over basic facts. The antidote to the growing challenges posed by this digital revolution is news literacy. This mini news literacy course includes two three-hour sessions that will teach anyone to become a more critical consumer of news. "

This OER is directed toward students to help facilitate their abilities to convey important information to an intended audience. The technique itself is broadly applicable across disciplines for those seeking to communicate a "most important" concept succinctly. Included is a transcript describing the experience of moving from a 100+ word starting point to a 5 word "nugget".

OER – INCLUDE
Unrestricted Use

Rating
0.0 stars

This coursebook has been developed in the scope of the Erasmus+ KA2 project INCLUDE (Intercultural Communication and Linguistic Upgrade in a Digital Environment). The project was set in the context of the global onset of the COVID-19 pandemic that has brought immense changes to the manner people communicate and engage in professional activities. Language and intercultural communication (LIC) teachers at higher education institutions teach courses that heavily depend on communication and they have had to invest more time and effort into transforming their teaching methods and materials into ones that are applicable in online teaching. At the same time, LIC teachers are the ones who have to prepare their students for real-life communication in a virtual setting as well as to enable them to acquire the Global Competence.

The main objective of the INCLUDE project was to boost students' employability on a global scale by ensuring an inclusive, progressive, high-quality language and communication course in a range of languages (English, Croatian, Portuguese, Greek) at higher education institutions across Europe and wider.

This unit is designed for a Public Speaking course and uses immersive technologies, found as OERs, which bring attention to the needs of Baruch students’ communities. By participating in this unit, students will spend time exploring OERs, and then receive training in video capture and editing tools including 360 cameras and Adobe Premier Pro to produce their own OERs which will be viewed by future classes. They will be partnered with the Baruch Maker Hub to explore how these tools have been used to produce public advocacy campaigns, and then in the classroom they will story board, rehearse and edit their own campaigns. They will then return to the Maker Hub for filming, editing, and viewing their productions. This unit aims to enhance student experiential learning by focusing on doing good in the world, as well as envisioning new career paths. Through engagements, such as this unit, taken early in the undergraduate curriculum, students will know what tools and trainings are available to them. They will gain rudimentary competence in those skills, and may work to overcome the economic divides at Baruch in which students enter college with radically different access to, skill with, and ability to produce using immersive technologies.

Exploring Scholarly Reading through Publisher, Librarian, and Reader Perspectives

Short Description:
In 2017, The Rebus Foundation embarked on a research and development project to prototype an open, web-based reading system, with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Our main goals with this project were to clearly identify and understand the different players involved in the publication, distribution and consumption of scholarly monographs, and to explore how Open Web technologies could improve scholars’ access to, and interaction with, scholarly monographs. We've summarized our research findings in this report. Visit rebus.foundation to learn more about the Rebus Foundation and our projects. You can also contact us at hi@rebus.foundation.

The Peer Review Kit: A Resource for Educators was developed by learning designers at ed2go, a Cengage company. The kit provides portable peer review content that can be repurposed and revised by educators to suit their specific online course needs. This lesson explains what peer review is, why it's important, and how to practice peer review in an online setting (both asynchronous and synchronous). Content is specific to creative writing, but can be easily modified to fit other subject areas. Quick true or false self-assessments, a multiple-choice quiz, sample peer review assignments, rubrics, discussion prompts, and resources for further learning are also provided. Peer review is a valuable communication skill that employers seek out in potential employees. Strategies for how to apply this soft skill to the job hunt are discussed within the lesson.

The skills of researching, inquiring of, and analyzing one’s own social identity and positionality will be undertaken in a peer-group environment with supportive agreements. This takes place over the first two weeks of the term so that it will serve in this context as a framing device for the overall course. The ability to recognize and articulate one’s own positionality — and to relate it to larger, inseparable systems through intersectionality — will be a valuable life skill that will evolve with the student long beyond the course and their college experience.

This process is intended to serve students equitably by acknowledging the reality of unconscious bias, becoming more aware of intersectionality in our social identities (Hardiman et al., 2007; Sensoy & DiAngelo, 2012), and better understanding how implicit and explicit aspects of our identities affect our experience.

Principles of Management for Leadership Communication

Leadership Communication Edition, University of Arkansas

Long Description:
This version adapted for leadership communication. Chapters from the original have been reordered. Some chapters have been deleted in this version.

Principles of Management is adapted from a work produced by a publisher who has requested that they and the original author not receive attribution. This adapted edition is produced by the University of Minnesota Libraries Publishing through the eLearning Support Initiative.

Principles of Management teaches management principles to tomorrow’s business leaders by weaving three threads through every chapter: strategy, entrepreneurship and active leadership.

Strategic — All business school teachings have some orientation toward performance and strategy and are concerned with making choices that lead to high performance. Principles of Management will frame performance using the notion of the triple bottom-line — the idea that economic performance allows individuals and organizations to perform positively in social and environmental ways as well. The triple bottom line is financial, social, and environmental performance. It is important for all students to understand the interdependence of these three facets of organizational performance.

The Entrepreneurial Manager — While the ”General Management“ course at Harvard Business School was historically one of its most popular and impactful courses (pioneered in the 1960s by Joe Bower), recent Harvard MBAs did not see themselves as ”general managers.“ This course was relabeled ”The Entrepreneurial Manager“ in 2006, and has regained its title as one of the most popular courses. This reflects and underlying and growing trend that students, including the undergraduates this book targets, can see themselves as entrepreneurs and active change agents, but not just as managers.

By starting fresh with an entrepreneurial/change management orientation, this text provides an exciting perspective on the art of management that students can relate to. At the same time, this perspective is as relevant to existing for-profit organizations (in the form intrapreneurship) as it is to not-for-profits and new entrepreneurial ventures.

Active Leadership —Starting with the opening chapter, Principles of Management show students how leaders and leadership are essential to personal and organizational effectiveness and effective organizational change. Students are increasingly active as leaders at an early age, and are sometimes painfully aware of the leadership failings they see in public and private organizations. It is the leader and leadership that combine the principles of management (the artist’s palette, tools, and techniques) to create the art of management.

This book’s modular format easily maps to a POLC (Planning, Organizing, Leading, and Controlling) course organization, which was created by Henri Fayol (General and industrial management (1949). London: Pitman Publishing company), and suits the needs of both undergraduate and graduate course in Principles of Management.

This textbook has been used in classes at: College of Alameda, Columbia Basin College, Flagler College, Johnson County Community College, Pasadena City College, Penn State University, Renton Technical College, San Diego Mesa College, Sierra College, Yuba College.

Discussions on why offering a print option enhances learning accessibility for some students are included, as well as, templates that can be used to take inventory of open educational activity and interest on campus.

Long Description:
The Print-on-Demand Guide provides an overview for post-secondary institutions interested in offering on-demand and pre-order printing services for open textbooks. In addition to being an instruction manual, various templates in this guide can be used as tools for taking inventory of open educational activity and interest on campus. For post-secondary institutions interested in expanding student accessibility to learning, information on personal preference, limited computer and internet availability, learning needs, literacy, and accessibility in general provides background on why to offer a print option for course materials.

The guide is laid out in four parts and covers the history behind print on demand; situations when printing open textbooks is warranted; reasons why an on-campus print-on-demand service benefits the post-secondary community; suggestions, considerations, and templates for setting up a print-on-demand service. Chapters include research, real-life examples, and quotes from bookstores, printshops, and libraries.

Long Description:
In this Open Educational Resource (OER), readers will learn about key topics related to professional communication using a psychological lens. Readers will have the opportunity to examine how communication and workplace behaviours are influenced by individual differences in emotion motivation, learning, memory, decision-making behaviour, and personality.

In the second half of the book, we explore how these individual differences impact our interactions with others in groups and how we lead. The final chapter of the book looks outward to society and discusses ethics from the perspective of individuals and organizations.

This resource also contains case studies that will allow readers to hone their critical thinking skills and apply theory to real-world scenarios. In addition, readers will have the opportunity to reflect on their own knowledge, skills, and abilities using self-assessments for each chapter.

Short Description:
Bringing together aspects of ethics, social and civil responsibility, advocacy and publics, this introductory textbook provides a new approach to communication theory and practice in the post truth era. In this book, students will examine fields that intersect with public interest frameworks to provide building blocks and strategies for effective communication. These include organisational listening, capacity building, partnerships and alliances, the role of social enterprises, the concepts of 'wicked problems' and 'discourse arenas', and the importance of participation and activism in generating democratic debate. The book examines social problems and interest conflicts that are faced every day - from environmental degradation to homelessness; public health to media power - and considers the positions of different publics and individuals in navigating the communication of public interest processes and outcomes.

Long Description:
‘What an amazing resource for students. The mixture of accessible and informative text, case studies, interactive activities, and more make this such an engaging read.’ Professor Kelly Fielding, University of Queensland

‘This book is an excellent resource for students, practitioners, and community organisations among others, which provides a comprehensive overview and deeper insights situating public interest communication in society.’ Assistant Professor Michele Clark, Bond University

‘Students will find Johnston and Gulliver’s book an excellent introduction to the theoretical debates around the concept of the ‘public interest’, an idea which is of central importance in ethics, democratic government, the law, and the notion of a ‘free press’.’ Dr Ian Somerville, University of Leicester

‘This is a fabulous introduction to key concepts in public interest communication. It untangles the notion of ‘publics’ and shows how theories of the public interest, the public sphere, and discourse arenas, among others, intersect with communication practice.’ Dr Skye Doherty, University of Queensland

‘This book shines a spotlight on the strategic value and purpose of communication by showing its centrality to finding solutions. While addressing action as well as theory, it goes beyond the usual tactical-level discussion to focus on the context in which communication contributes to society.’ Dr Leanne Glenny, University of South Australia

This oral communication content includes several types of common college-level presentations including an informative speech, visual aid presentation, and Monroe's Motivated Sequence persuasive speech. All of the presentations are for critique and compatible with rubrics that examine basic elements of public speaking. All presentations in this series were delivered by student volunteers as part of a technology fellowship project at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Please note that student presenter first names were included as a way to promote classroom climate and respect when critiquing. It is found that students are more likely to critique in a respectful manner when the example speech presenter is named.
